1200GS Alarm

My Alarm was installed by my dealer.

It took them 8+ hours, but because I had ordered it with an alarm and it it was a factory screw up and I did not have to pay any labor. The one annoying thing is that the tech could not read German and could not figure out how to connect the alarm to the flashers. It works just fine besides that. If anyone has any experience installing these things and knows how to hoop up the flashers please PM me.

Cheers

Not sure, I never tried that one. I tried the Auto Set and Beep As Confirmation - but found them to be a real pain - I set it all back to standard after less than a week :)
Thanks to your instructions I've at least got it to give beep on arm and disarm. I've left the auto arm thing off for now, see how I get on.

Fitting the unit itself is very straight forward. When it has been connected to the bike the unit then has to coded to the bike using a specific programme within the GT1 tester which some off you may or may not have seen at your dealer. When the unit has been encoded to the bike you are then able to programme in various stages such as auto arm etc.
You will not be able to install the alarm successfully at home its a dealer fit only. This also applies to all other control units around the bike such as abs.central frame electrics, clocks etc.Neither can you substitute similar components off other bikes to test unless you code them to that bike. And before you all go and say sod that i'll fit a datatool etc ,well you may risk affecting the wiring systems on the bike which will not be a warranty issue as it says on the disclaimer.

alarm retrofit.

it is easy to retrofit an alarm. BUT! you will need to recode the ZFE to communicate with the alarm. To recode the ZFE you need the GT1!

Alarm

This is correct, fitting the alarm took me 25 mins it took another hour to programme the thing but the indicators will not flash phoned BMW and was told that the bike needed to go on the GT1 to let the bike know to flash the indicators, the only reason I chose the BM alarm is that I liked the position of the LED which would have been a bitch to fit a different one in its place,
mine is also too loud on setting / unsetting and would have to be hit by a boy racers XR3 to activate.

yes you will need the software update which should have really been done on your bike by now to correct the fault

AH! there was a problem with the recode software on the last programind cd (2.1) there is a new cd out now, 2.2 which will sort out the indicator problem.

Mine doesnt self arm either. In fact it seems a pretty poor alarm not reacting at all when I open the panniers or top box.

Didnt get a manual with it. So what optional settings are there? I thought it was just on or off.

The BMW oem alarm has a motion sensor that can be switched on or off, yours may actually be set to off if it isn't sounding when the bike is moved or disturbed, you can switch the acoustic confirmation on or off, you can set the alarm to set automatically when the ignition key is removed and you can also add extra remotes to the alram system, the BMW Motorrad part number for the alarm book your dealer should have supplied you with is:
01 41 7 690 841
04.2004 2nd edition GB.

Hope that helps a little.

So whats the general opinion on the BMW alarm then, to fit or not.

SPC have a deal at the moment spend £100 in the workshop or on accessories and get a £50 voucher. So I'm booked in for a 6000 service which will probably get me £100 in vouchers, to put towards an alarm. The reckon it will take 30 mins to fit.

Mind you I was going to stick my autocom under the passenger seat, so I may have to relook at that option.

Personally, I'd stick a Datatool on. The BMW alarm only goes off due to local thermonuclear detonations:mad:

I have the standard BMW alarm fitted to my 1200. Havent had any problems and its very sensitive to any movement. As said earlier in this thread, you can program it to do all sorts of things and the motion sensor can be turned off.

Although it has not been thatcham approved, if you are insured with BMW insurance, then you do get a discount from them.

Mine really is not sensative at all. You can give the bike a good knock and it doesn't go off. When I asked at the BMW garage, they said that the sensitivity could not be adjusted. I'd be happier with the thing if it was slightly more sensative.

Mine's the same. The bloody cat get's under the bike cover and sleeps on the seat leaving loads of hair stuck to the ACF50 covered bike. If the alarm were a bit more sensitive it might go off and scare her form doing it:D

I hate cats that love bikes...

My mate was working for a while at BMW dealer in Marbella, and I saw hoh the retrofit and alarm on a GS1200, same as mine.

What a task! Roughly 20 minutes... Steps as I remember it:

1) rear and front seats off, unscrew the rear tray under the seat,

2) put the alarm in the ad-hoc cavity, conect it to the aready-there plug,

3) refit the above items.

2 and a half) Before that, conect the bike to the BMW computer, and in 5 minutes, "tell the bike she has an alarm fitted". Job done and they cherged the client 100€ (60 quids approx).

Piece of cake... for them! :D
