1200GS Corrosion

Just noticed corrosion/rust appearing on the black bar in front of the oil cooler. The paint coating seems very thin. The bike is June 2007 and has covered 5400 mostly dry miles. This appears to be part of the tubular support for the beak etc.
Anyone else got this?

Same thing. 1 year old this month (The bike, not me) 15000 kms. Lots of rain & I doubt if it's caused by too much cleaning. Utterly reliable but finish isn't good.

I've done 9000 miles since last May, using it every workday, and I've no corrosion. Do you use FS365/ACF50 or any other corrosion inhibiter?

Perhaps red ones don't rust

Mine's done 20000 in all weathers and no sign of corrosion there, mine is mostly on bolts but fuel filler replaced due to paint flaking.

Could yours have been chipped by stones etc.?

i have the same thing looks like stone chips but not a mark on beak or headlight so i can only assume it is bug chips.

paint is very thin and it is part of the front frame so cannot be taken off for spraying. anyone got any ideas on how to prevent this happening:cool

Lanotec or similar is a Lanolin based corrosion inhibiter. We use it on enclosures etc that are out in the weather.
It does dry abit sticky though, so it make pickup some dust.
I use it on the Blackbird as you always get small coating defects that will rust.

Best method is to reapply the coating, but as you say, might not be easy.

Get all parts that are corroded replaced under warrantee, I believe on BMW bikes its 2 yrs, the minute you are out of warrantee, BMW will walk away from helping you out. I had the very same thing happen to me. areas to check for corrosion are, the braces for the screen, the final drive (Check underneath the drive) the bar infront of the oil cooler, and the alternator belt cover, behind the front wheel.

My GSA is was only 4 months old with 3,500 miles but the centre stand cross bar looked like it had been shot blasted. The cross bar was going rusty just from washing the bike.

The paint is obviously very thin and I must have done a few extra resurfaced roads with loose chips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got it changed under warranty, but wrapped insulation tape over the cross bar of the new one as I suspect the paint is not any better.

There only seems to be one reliable method - keep it in the garage and don't ride it. Ever. No, scratch that. They rust even in the garage.

I eventually got the rear subframe, wheels and final drive changed on mine after they all corroded last winter. I haven't even been riding this winter and the new rear wheel and final drive have corroded again in exactly the same places. How many times can I get them changed under warranty? Or do i roll over and just give up?

Rust on centre stand

I had the same problem with rust on the centre stand, an 08 model.
Treated it, repainted then coated it with black waxoil. Finally I fitted plate to protect from anything thrown up from the road.
