Hi all - how much do these things cost new? Are they durable? Would anyone reccomend them? Do they need a frame to mount?

Cheers & thanks for your time

Jan

£400 is the full list price I believe.

The necessary frames are standard fitment on UK spec 1200's.

Personally I love mine - having had expanding panniers on my 650 years ago I'm sold on the idea.

!00% waterproof. Quick and easy to atach/detach I have them on 'thin' when just going to work / going away for the w/e and then on 'fat' when there are two of us away for the w/e. With the top box and a tank bag two can travel in relative luxury for a couple of weeks - just :)

They are pricy but, IMHO, worth it :thumb

Thanks guys - there's a set on ebay for £340 ATM but with postage not much of a saving. Might try to do a deal when I pick my bike up from the dealers.

Cheers

Worth negotiating with your dealer, bear in mind panniers don#t come with locks and if you want to have a single key system matced to the bike those locks ar £22.50 a piece.

Full retail for the panniers for 2006 is £225 btw.

Good luck :thumb

PS buying from your dealer makes it a lot simpler in the event of a warranty claim as well :D

Oh yush, plus locks :D

They appear in the for sale and wanted section now and then, but I'd see what your dealer will offer as a package :thumb

Of course you could go for something in the aluminium line but don't expect to be saving money! :D

BMW Panniers

I have just read a 50,000 test o, the 1200°GS. At the end the panniers were still 100% watertight. My own experience, confirmed in the test, is that the mounting adjustment and locknuts must be set up carefully - or they can fall off.

Good point Brian, there is a specific height the mushroom heads of the pannier frames to be set at, I have it somewhere on the other PC but I know its critical to the stability and security of the panniers.

If the dealer fits them and they fall off, he carries the cost, if it's you..........

Thunder, about your bike...

Nice looking bike - same colour as mine (when it is mine!!) - what is the black extension on the "beak"? Is it an OEM accessory or aftermarket?

Thanks

Made by Touratech, easy to fit and I think finishes the beak off, not everyone likes them but then we are all different.

It's six weeks old, has 1200 miles on the clock and has kept me fiddling for hours, oh yes up to last week it was silver but thats easy to change as well. :D

go check your other PC when you've a chance will ya? I've had mine off to fit my Givi rack and have been told to re-fit with spring washers (As apparently they can vibe loose) so I'd be grateful for the info and where to measure from.

Fanx in advance

Measure distance (x) between the top edge of the locating pin and the top edge of the washer.

Setting, locating pin for case

25 - 29 mm

Result: Measured value is out of tolerance.

Slacken locknut (2) and adjust locating pin (1) to specified distance (x).

Tighten the locknut.

Note
A clearly perceptible initial resistance when the case engages indicates that the setting of the locating pin is correct. The locating pin requires adjustment if play becomes perceptible after prolonged use.

Locknut, locating pin for case

16 Nm

Good advice from someone.

If your buying a new GS, ask for discount. They threw my set in for free :D

Now all i need to do is buy the tank bag and top box and inners and the GPS and the extra lights and the ... continue ad infinitum :bounce1

One of my 1200 panniers fell off just over 2 weeks ago. BMW will fix it. It was dealer installed. The pin was loose. I had been checking, but I guess not often enough. They are going to Lock-tite them now.

The metal side covers on them do seem to ding up rather easy as well.

Except for one falling off, I really like them. :)

I would of looked at after market Aluminium panniers, but there is no place around were I live that sells them off the floor. In spending that kind of money, I like to see what I am getting first.

A quality piece of kit. Definately waterproof, I've tested them (and the topbox) many times.

Worth haggling with your dealer - I did and got a very good price from them. If you just ring round a few dealers you'll be surprised at the difference, some quote book price, some offer a discount off the bat.

I got my panniers (December) for £365 including the key coded to my ignition. Personally, I like them more than the ali type boxs some people use, but then again, I'm not heading off on my round the world trip just yet. :thumb
