1200GS Fuel Pump Bypass Cable

they are available all over mate, all the powerlet stuff uses the SAE connectors and you can buy them easily off the shelf..
Well I gave up fairly early when I realised I already had one but am curious where I could obtain as Maplin, ebay, quick google search didn't come up with anything obvious. Any links? Cheers.
 
So, in summary.

(A) These leads will work if you connect them directly to the battery. But you will need at least a 7 amp fuse in-line. The power supply will be continuous, so you will need an in-line switch; simply removing the fuse will do.

(B) These leads will work if you tap them into a power source that is capable of taking a load greater than 7 amps. It is more than likely that these will be switched via the ignition.

(C) These leads will NOT work if you plug them directly into the standard auxiliary power supply socket(s) on a 1200 GS / GSA. The reason? The pump controller draws more than the socket(s) 5 amp limit.


My friends FPC went a few weeks ago and I got the plug off it and made up a bypass lead using a R/C Tamiya type battery pack plug (I use these a lot on the bike for 12V connections). This plugs straight into my Optimate battery charging fly lead which includes a fuse. Used some mains cable from a duff DVD player, a few bits of heat shrink and the two plugs. Total cost less than a £1.

Certainly a business opportunity but reckon the retail prices for a FPC bypass lead needs to be around 10 to 20 % of the cost of a new FPC. I laugh when companies try selling extended guarantees for up 75% of the cost of the original item. Why would anybody ever buy them?

SAE connectors and where to get them

Just had a quick look on the web and came up with the following;

CPC
Farnell
RS Components

Also its a common connector for car fuel pumps so try any large motor factors such as Partco

Neil

Also if someone can get the TYCO part number for the pump connector I should be able to find a source for those as well...

I bought one of those leads when they were first offered as a good insurance policy for on tour. :rolleyes:

Deliberately went with the canbus connector to make life as easy as possible in the even of a failure, and now it seems it doesn't work - GREAT :blast

How come there was a link to a video clearly showing it working this way though??

I'm not going to debate the whys and wherefores of whether or not it should have been sold to me the way it was, because life is too short, and at least I found out about the problem before I needed it to work at the roadside.

But, I will have to find a way to connect it without the canbus socket. :mmmm

I recall at the beginning the disclaimer was not included with the instructions above the video on my website, because I was unaware of the fuel pumps amperage at the time. If you would like an SAE cable, I'm willing to send you one at no charge. PM me your address if you are interested.

I received my FOC replacement cable from Burnszilla last week as promised, and have fitted a connector that would allow me to run the fuel pump from my Optimate fly lead. :thumb2

I know there's been comments in this thread about the relative cost of the leads vs the parts used, but this guy has come up with a good idea and deserves to make some money for his trouble.

Now that the early teething problems have been sorted, and I've experienced 1st hand some proper customer service, I'd have no hesitation in recommending these leads to anyone who wants a bit of peace of mind without having to track down old FPCs and start soldering for themselves.
 
How permanent is this workaround? ie - how long before a new fpc is needed?

It's a get you home fix. Nothing more, nothing less.

That's not to say it won't work for a year. But why bother? Get the correct part and fit it ASAP, would seem to be sensible.
 
The reason for the question is - I'm on a month long trip, would it be better to take a spare fpc?

The bypass cable is designed to stop you being stranded at the roadside and get you to a dealer asap

Its not designed as a use every day till you feel like replacing the FPC as I believe the fuel pump will be constantly running at full pelt

If you're off somewhere with no dealer network I'd take a spare FPC, if there are dealers where you're going just take the bypass cable and buy a FPC if/when you need to
 
I just got a call from a guy in New Mexico who said his friend's 2008 R1200GS ADV had the fuel controller fail. The R1200GS Adv did not get the 'better drainage' design update.

What makes you think it is down to water ingress?

Mine failed... Dry as a bone... No corrosion..... Burnt out components, I'm given to understand was the root cause.....

Still, never mind. Carry a spare.

Good point. I guess the heat sink is not cooling the unit enough.

Notice how the circuit board components are sealed in the silicone type sealant......could explain why 'overheating' of the FPC is one cause of failure, I imagine that sealant to be a good heat insulator and there is no contact between the components and the suposed heat sink!

I'm getting emails and phone calls of fuel pump controller failures on the R1200RT and F800GS too.
 
My brother is something of an electronics expert.

Has anyone got a broken FPC controller he can have to play with? If a part has failed due to being undersized for its job he's likely to find it and almost as likely to have a fix for it.
