Hi all I've got a 1200gs iconic now do I put it away and never use it and hope it rises in value long term or ride it ?

It's a bit of paint and a different seat....ride it.

Take a look at the 1150 gs se....same thing... a bit of paint, and folks tend to think they're much more valuable.

In reality they don't sell for the inflated prices. Unless absolutely mint, but any mint 1150 adv will sell for good money.

I do speak from experience.

Ride it.
It's a bike, it will depreciate, ridden or not.
It will probably command a bit of a premium when selling second hand but will depreciate at the same kind of rate as maybe a "90th Anniversary Edition"

Sent using hocus pocus........... boo!

So BMW have labeled a bike "Iconic"? And expect lads to then presume it to be actually iconic, and pay more for it?

An SE is typically a shorter-run or limited-build-count, isn't it? Like the super-handsome white 1150GSA SE - only in production for one year, IIUC.

Biking's been/being invaded by investors!

I'd have thought 1200GS to be one of the most ubiquitous bikes of its genre? Surely that limits any form of exclusivity or specialness?

All true, yet that doesn't stop some muppets being taken in by BMWs rather sly marketing.Ironic would have been better !!

Iconic's are very limited - to 100 units. Each are individually numbered and certified and celebrate 100 years of BMW Motorrad. I would have thought they would hold their value rather well.

Fair enough.

Ironic indeed, a 1200 labeled as iconic. I'd have thought the 1150 to be the primary icon of the genre, and the 1200 a copy or parody of it. Celebrating a plasticcy descendent of the daddy as an icon seems odd.

Read the literature. The GS and GSA are painted to represent the Iconic R80GS Paris Dakar inc the red seats. Just so happens that the R1200 GS/A LC are the bikes around at the 100 year point; it's not their fault :blast

Not sufficiently interested to read literature, and to be fair your explanation outlines what I hadn't realised (that the iconic label on the current 1200GS was a tip to the PD G/S, and not (as I'd assumed) a statement that the current 1200GS is the icon). Carry on... :thumb

Saw one in dealers the other day and despite the ' it's a posh paint job and red seat' brigade who state it's overpriced BLAH BLAH BLAH I must say it looked absolutely stunning and worth every penny. I hope you enjoy it

Only in the UK, it's just a normal GS bike repainted in Britain, by BMW GB and a few stickers added, - for a £2k uplift in price, KERCHING.............it's not an 'official' BMW AG product like the 1150GSA SE or the 2010 30 years GS thing or the 90th Gold edition of the 1200GS/GSA in 2013

Coburn & Hughes did the same when trying to flog off a load of Guzzi Lemans' back in the day (black & gold), they're quite sought after now AFAIK.

Having said that, we're talking about a Guzzi Lemans here not a GS so not really comparable - I take it back :D

I was in Lind today and saw the Iconic. :drool I must say they are a very pretty looking bike. They have 2 in at the mo. Number 51 has sold but number 82 is still up for grabs. It may just be a standard bike with a fancy paintjob and not to everyones taste but I liked it. :thumb2

I saw one in Bowkers, Preston.

It did look really nice. However, I noted that the luggage racks were painted black, as are the crash bars, my immediate thoughts were the first time metal luggage is fitted to these they'll be scratched to buggery and make the bike look "well used". At least it'll look like it's been on an "Adventure" straight from the off! ;)

I asked one of the blokes on the BMW stand at the show about that, and he said that if the BMW luggage removed the paint/ powdercoat, BMW will replace the frames under warranty. He managed to keep a straight face as he said it, even though I was laughing!
