So I'm getting geared up for my first proper 2 up tour round Britain in a month or two with SWMBO on the back. Full Stahlkoffer pannier set, plus a couple of small 13ltr dry bags.

Being a bit of a geek I've done a small spreadsheet of our max load vs the bikes max payload and it's pretty bloody close!

Left pannier 8kg
Right pannier 8kg
Top Box 5kg
Dry bags 5kg
Me @15st 95kg
Pillion @14st 88kg

Total load on bike 209 kg
Max payload 216 kg

Obviously this is still not including bike clothing, helmets and boots.
Is this becoming dangerous???

Very nice set up you've got there but you could also use a tankbag and some tank panniers if you needed to!:thumb

All up weight can be nearly half a ton and on an a 1200GSA you've got a bag and a half of 'cement' in your lap when you brim the tank..........!

Looks good but it'll be a lot lighter at the front end and prone to the odd wheelie or two if your cack handed on the throttle at low speed...........Just go nice and easy and you'll soon get used to how she handles!:thumb

Load it up and have a wee ride out and make any adjustments you think you might need before the big trip.

When you come home you'll have thighs like Fatima Whitbread!:D

FP.

being pedantic - are the pannier and top box weights incl the weight of the boxes themselves?, they look a bit manly, not that it will make much diff, have a good trip!

Rear shock?
Im running @ about the same payload two up with luggage. The shock wasnt up to it as was bottoming out. The hugger had signs of rub with the exhaust.
Solution: Wilbers front and rear shock.
Revs racing re springing the rear and servicing. Fitted them both and its :thumby:

Ok, here's the honest truth, the one assuming that your other half is standing over your shoulder reading this and the reason you asked the questions wasn't because you actually wanted to hear what the other oafs above have said.

No, you are verging on the extreme upper limits of the safe weight allowance of your motorcycle.

This means, and I'm sorry to say, your wife/partner/significant other can NOT take her/his hair curlers, hair dryer, three hats, four pairs of shoes, more than two pairs of knickers, 4 shirts plus two blouses with you on this trip.

Neither can she take her clock radio, more than one tube of lippy, nor more than one day's worth of lady plugs/panty liners.......

Shops 'over there' (wherever you are going) have EVERYTHING she needs, and you are simply being a sensible and loving husband by insisting that you stick within BMW's recommended weight limits for your tour :thumb

Allow her ONE WHOLE pannier, that's it........any more and you can tell her officially from the advice offered to you here on UKGSer that you will both die, or at least suffer quite nasty rashes in a horrific accident caused by the frame of your motorcycle breaking under the intense stress of being overloaded :rob

PS that set-up looks damn smart :thumb

Enjoy your trip :beerjug:

Ha ha ... thats what I tell my missus - you have one pannier - and as an act of genorosity I'll even give you the non exhaust pannier ... :thumb

Yabbut you and Rosy share lippies, so you have an advantage there :D

These

are likely to cost megabux but they do solve the luggage space and bike balance problems.

Eurghhhh.....I'd rather stick Olive in a sidecar thanks

Heavy going

Just go and enjoy, we've all carried tons on the back with camping gear etc so just get on it and RIDE IT!!. It's only the UK so all roads are good and plenty of stealers about to help out if something go's pop.

Ditch the top box & use a roll bag.

We had 245kg on a Transalp (max payload 185kg as I recall) for our trip to Greece & all was fine.
Not sure what'd be the case in the event of an accident investigation however......

A GS should piss it, I take it, you are camping?

Phil

Only really matters if you have an accident, or a warranty claim - generally they won't be asking you how fat you are though.

We have had the GS fully loaded (tent and full panniers - and strapped on bits and bobs), plus 2 well over 100kg passenger and rider - performed perfectly.

Yep Phil, camping with a Vango Mirage 350 plus minimal bits and bobs.
Might think about ditching the top box :)

Monowheel trailers don't sway, don't steer the bike they do carry stuff low down and mostly not on the bike's own wheels. Trailers are also more secure. How many touring couples have to always leave someone with the bike because they have easily stolen stuff strapped to the bike.

Monowheels are about getting to a touring location then having the bike quickly usable without all the weight and luggage. They are not pretty but a GS loaded with stuff is certainly no oil painting. Handling is probably better than a heavily loaded bike. Im sure when done properly its no worse.

The biggest snag is their huge cost and the quality ones are just fugly (IMO).

Im not advertising Unigo but they do show how these things work.

If you want to try a roll bag I have a 90 ltr and a couple of 60ltr lomo bags. I will be heading to Norwich Saturday sometime if you want to meet up I will be parking by the market.
