1200gs or 1200 adventure help

Good Morning all iam new on here so slowley reading all the posts and catching up with the good and bad points so heres where iam at i no some will have a go and some will come up with some great points been looking at the 1200 for some time and love it in the red and today i took the plunge and went into plymouth bmw wow :thumb2 stunning strvice awnsered all my silly questions swopped seats about let me seat on a few different heights and feel the different weights and all that very suprised to find its so easy to sort for the sorter leg :) at the min i have a harley and love that but hate the long winter as very few ride them i do all year round so thinking this maybe loads better so whats your pros and cons of the bike

mileage per tank
tyre wear
serivce cost

any other tips hints just want to find out bits bobs

and yes have road test booked with deaer soon and harley up for grabs to lol :beer::beer::beerjug: many thanks for your help advise

Hi there Misfit and welcome. I purchased a 1 year old GS te about 8 weeks ago and it is my first BMW I too had many questions/concerns.
I get about 200 miles from a tankful I usually fill up after the fuel light comes on as im not sure yet how "accurate" the gauge is
my computer says im doing 51mpg
the bike is fitted with Michelin anakee tyres showing no real signs of wear with 3200m covered
bike came with its first year service so that didn't cost me.

my previous bike was a triumph tiger 800 and although I liked the tiger very much I am glad I have my gs.

Many thanks for your reply Nikonnigel that does answer a few things as I was looking at the triumph to but the gs has had my eye for a long time and time to jump and have some fun
 
I've got a lowered GS on order after test riding a Triumph 800 and an Explorer. For me it's the bike that will do just about anything with no downsides apart from the cost! But if you have a Harley you'll be used to that. The test ride will convince you 1 way or the other... just try and keep it secret from the salesman and play it cool! At this time of year a little patience could get you a better deal. Also if buying new you'll have to order it and expect about an 8 week wait....
 
Unless you have very long legs, and absolutely need to travel long distances without filling up, then I can see no advantage in going for a GSA. The standard gs is lighter, nimbler, and faster, and a whole heap better looking than the GSA, and don't forget when fully fuelled that's an awful lot of weight up high.

Personally I think there's an awful lot of willy waving attached to the GSA. You hear folks on here saying 'It's got great road presence' 'It's so much more planted' what a lot of nonsense.

Hopefully they've got the early problems sorted, and if so, then the GS will be a very fine motorcycle.

As for the GSA, sorry , I just don't get it.

I was talking to a guy at the W/E with a 65 plate GSA. He was taking great pride in telling me he'd just spent £17,200 on this bike.

I wandered off for a cuppa looked across at my 15 plate Explorer that was 2mnts old when I paid £9,400 for it, it made me smile.

thanks for your reply steve and that does make a lot of sence as i found the gs a lot nicer then the gsa for weight as iam not that tall and owning a harley iam used to the as you put it willy waving as one buys a new bike the rest fallow. :blast:D
 
Don't be put off by my current GS issues, they are a brilliant bike generally - and I've had four without issues until this one.

I've been getting 54 mpg when the bloody thing goes.

Oh and unless doing long tours, I'd say GS, but try both yourself for a decent test ride.

I've had a GS and a GSA this year and prefer the GSA. Each to their own really and don't be swayed by others opinions as it is just that, an opinion. Go for what ever you like and feel comfortable with. If when you park up, walk away and have to have a sneak look back you've made the right choice. Test rides will help loads if you can arrange comparisons.
Ignore all of the above as they are my opinion.

What I have found
Great presents on the road
Clear view ahead
Comfort of at least 1 to 2 tanks a day
Ave fule on a gsa is apx 380/400 per tank depends on how you ride
Tyres another personal thing I changed to pr4 and have done 4200 on them and they are only half worn
Don't think you will be unhappy with a gsa
 
I turned my 2007 gs into a gs adventure. I like the gs but it would not go far enough on one take of gas for me. A friend was parting out a same year adventure so I bought all the parts to make mine and adventure. I can go 300 miles on a tank which is about 4 hours. The gsa tank gives much more weather protection than the gs tank. I put an Aeroflow windscreen on my bike and that gives me great weather protection even with the small sport screen. If you are going too order a bike you can order the gs adventure with a low seat and low frame option. If you want more range and better weather protection than the adventure is the ticket. If you want a thinner and a bit lighter bike then the gs will be a better choice. They both handle the same to me at slow and high speeds. Good luck and post up some picks of what you buy.
