I'm considering buying either a 1200gs or 1200adv (LC model) with the intention of taking the bike off road in Morocco. I know the adv is supposed to be better off piste but I'm concerned about the extra size and weight.
Has anyone riden both off road andcan comment? Perhaps someone has attended the Bmw off road skills course in Wales?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

You don't get to ride an Adventure on the BMW ORS unless you're an instructor.

Weight is your enemy, the Adventure is better off road but it is made by KTM and is an ' R ' ;)

I took my GS to Morocco last Sept , did some off road while I was there , GS was fine handled all in its stride, ask yourself why the GSA is better ?

As much as I like the KTM Adv I wouldn't take one on a trip to Morocco; my 640 Adv let me down on a trip there in 2007 (warped discs, carb icing, engine blow up!). I bought it new and was only 6 months old, KTM didn't honour the warranty...say no more. Otherwise a great bike.

I'm hoping someone here has ridden both the 1200gs and 1200adv offroad who can compare and comment on how they perform.

I haven't ridden a GSA to compare against, but I have ridden with some, and my GS went everywhere that they did. I had to be a little more careful of fuel stops that was all. My legs are too short for a GSA.

The only real factors to consider here is whether you need the extra fuel range and the extra height and suspension travel.
