1200GS or 1200GSA?

The bike you had before was what you wanted, you spent lots of money getting up to BTBR standard (whatever the feck that is?) then you sell it. Now you are looking at buying a bike you've only seen at a bike show.

It's all to do with wanting things and not being able to enjoy what you already have.

I think you've got yourself in a real mess, never being happy with what you have and always wanting more. From what I can gather the bike being clean and having the best lighting system mean more to you than the places you go and experiences you have on the bike.

I don't think you will ever be happy because another bike will be released and you'll want that.

I'm sure it really won't matter what bike you buy, you’re obsessive standards won't let you enjoy it.

I was also falling into the trap of "doesn't the new bike look great" "Only just bought (June) my GSA" - "should I have waited for the new un" "how much would it cost me to swap" then read your comments & remembered that I'd bought the latest 1150 I could get hold of for a reason - that being cos I'd already had two of em & loved the fekkers, far mor than the 1200, (which I'd ordered befor even seeing & didn't personally like when I test rode the demo bikes)

Yep - well happy - got the best GSA for ME - would have been a complete to change it but it took your comments to make me see sense

Ok guys, I am changing my GS12 in Sept 06 two years old so time to change ( OK OK I can hear more money than sense, well I almost died getting it so F*ing spend it)

Having done the math, getting another GS12 (which I think is a great bike and no way getting an OLD 1150 adv) with all the bits I like/ want comes in at around £10 giv or take a few quid. Or I get the new GSA which would cost me another £500 ish.

Drawback GSA height but then I already have a 12 low seat (which was an optional extra when I purchased mine) so I could use it.

Pros as had been said it is the DB in the looks department has far less plastic bits than the basic model (especially those bloody side panels)

In my position what would you do? Gonna have same engine/running gear/electrical problems which ever I buy..

Get into training!

I removed my low seat and refitted the original a couple of months ago, initially in the low position. I've since moved it into the high position, which I reckon must be pretty similar to having a low seat on the 12GSA.

If I was fixed on buying either a new 12GS or a new 12GSA, then it's a no-brainer (IMHO). The question for me is whether to swap in a perfectly good 12-month old GS with 20k miles on the clock. Doesn't make financial sense, but nevertheless...

I test rode a 1150 Adv and loved it, but realised I was on tippy-toes and would drop the rascal a zillion times in gravelly, off-camber car parks, but I was still going to get one 'til I rode the 1200 demo.
All of which is a long way round of saying these ADV models are too tall and top-heavy for 5'9" midgets like me.
I'm looking to replace "Skinny 12" in Spring '07, so I've plenty of time to work out the options.............

Can I ask if anyone as actually found out if the 1200 low seat will fit the new 12ADV???, and what is the seat height on the 12GS with the low seat fitted??.
I am hopeing the low seat option is available for the 12ADV..

I have still not been able to establish if it will fit or not. BUT, a thought to bear in mind, its ok to lower the seat but in doing so you would also need to lower the footpegs to suit!

So thats even more money to be spent then, on top of the £11k!

The std 1200GS seat height with the OE seat is 840mm in the low position and 860mm in the high.

Compared to a whopping 895mm for the 1200GSA in the low setting.

BTBR I asked this question of Zmegaol as well, do you not think looking at the bike in comparsion with the "basic GS" that most of the gain in height is the saddle it self? As reading all the bits and pieces the bike has only gained 20mm in actual road clearance?

But not having seen the beast in the flesh it is difficult to confirm. Also have you noticed that in most picture BMW are trying to hide the height, even at the show the wheels are buried in the gravel..

Geff low seat on GS12 gives saddle height of 800mm so if my assumption is correct that would give an ADV height of 820mm but the low seat is bloody hard.

Speaking to the chaps on the stand at the NEC.
They tell as an experiment they tried the lower seat from a standard GS12 on the new ADV and it fitted perfectly.
But just to give you some perspective of size here's me with said bike.
I'm 6ft tall and ss mentioned in another thread.. Very smug

Well I have read this post several times over, and I conclude that it is near enough spot on!

So much so, for once I have stopped and taken a couple of steps backwards and stepped away from the ever increasing line of people ready to order the GSA.

Consequently I cancelled my order this morning and had my deposit refunded.
