1200gs rear drive oil -BLACK!

Well,

I decided to tip out the rear drive oil to see if it was ok - my 1150 always has plenty of whiskers on the drain plug so I thought - let's see!
The oil that came out was as black as, well, a very black thing. Seemed ok except the colour??
Anyone seen this before?
Any clues?
I refilled with synthetic 75w90 gear loi, can't get the Castrol stuff.
It's not black too, by any chance?
