my 2006 1200gs smells of petrol i noticed last week in the garage
& went to a bike rally this weekend & it was pointed out that my bike smelt of petrol

any body any ideas where to look as i have not taken it apart
any known faults on the 1200 ?
8800 miles full bmw service history :blast

check the fuel filler cap is locked shut first (no need to ask how I know:o)

And then....check the QD's are all connected fully....and if there's any leakage past them.

The little o rings inside each one are easy to damage when connecting them after a tank removal .

no it's not that

have checked filler cap that was secure

would the tank have to come off for any services
as bike only done 8800

I wouldn`t have thought so but the fuel pipes coming out of the tank are easy to check just take the plastic tank covers off either side and make sure theres no leaks when the bike is running.

Have you had a look round the bike when the engine is running? any damp patches (fnarr fnarr :D ) that smell of petrol?

will have a look when it stops raining

but at the moment that looks set in for a bit

Hi

I had petrol smells once. I had taken off the tank plastics and the filler cap and obviously hadn't managed to do it up right. It looked fine, but apparently wasn't. My bike lives outside and the smell wasn't too bad so I didn't notice for a couple of months (I only really noticed that I filled up with petrol and didn't use the bike for a few weeks, and then came back to a half-empty (evaporated) tank).

Tweaking up the six allen bolts around the filler sorted it - be careful though, they are quite easy to strip.

How full is the tank? Fuel out the over flow, or vapour escaping out the overflow lines. How hot is your garage?

Smell of petrol

Did you read recently about the guy who bought a Puegeot saloon converted to run on LPG? After refuelling, he could smell gas, so wound the window down before lighting a cigarette! He only wanted to blow the bloody doors off......and the boot and the bonnet..... Survived remarkably unscathed, saying he was going to buy a diesel next!!

Yep - I've riden round with the filler cap undone before on the 12GS and it really did stink.

I don't think the tank comes off for services - but possibly if you've had the brake fluid changed???

I took the rubber insert out of the filler to make filling up quicker but then found the cap does not seal properly without it and got constant smell of petrol until I put it back in :blast

The tank comes off for brake fluid change (at least if you have ABS) - I watched it happen to mine last weekend. I believe the brake fluid change is time based rather than mileage based - mine was a third annual service.
