1200gs smell of petrol

I took the rubber insert out of the filler to make filling up quicker but then found the cap does not seal properly without it and got constant smell of petrol until I put it back in :blast

Yeah it does, the cap has a rubber seal on it that seals against the filler neck. I`ve had my rubber bung out for 4 years and no petrol stink & I drilled a hole in the neck to get more in :thumb2

which seal :nenau

I wouldn't use this:-

Fuel pump gasket

Just a remote possibility - Have you had the fuel pump replaced recently? Mine was changed (under warranty on a 2004 bike!!!) and the gasket did not align properly the first time. The garage (and bedroom above) stank of petrol and when I checked there were signs of petrol coming down the inner tank onto the exhaust headers. BMW picked the bike up in a van and refitted the gasket. OK since then but maybe worth checking. If you remove the left hand tank panel you would see signs of petrol on the black tank.

Have to say, this BMW warranty ain't half bad :thumb2 :clap

mine is out of warranty so will have to do it myself but will have a look the weekend ?

I recently spent 50 miles or so riding behind a pal of mine in Libya and I thought that the bloody strong smell of fuel must be coming from Mr Ghaddafhi's oil wells and refineries nearby. Wasn't until I looked under my tank bag that I realised that the fuel cap wasn't shut properly. Felt like a real tit but now feel much better as there are quite a few others like me. Couldn't believe just how strong the smell was even at quite high speeds.

I agree but also if the filler nozzle isn't right in and square when you fill up it sprays up real bad,and cost me a new screen! being slightly short in the arse I decided to turn the whole filler cap around so it opens forward, not to difficult and much easier to access/see into, anyone else tried this? bike still stinks of gas same as it did before though!

You can take out the bung with no issues. Obviously if you then overfill, it'll piss out.

I had the same on my GSA - at the Service Woolaston said that the 'breather' was a bit blocked (6,000 miles only) - they 'cleaned' it out and said they all do that.
It still had a strong petrol smell from time to time when stood in the garage.

update

right
put new o ring in quick link on fuel line
used airline to blow out breather pipes
had fuel cap off to check its all fitted properly
seams to be sealed
now filled up with petrol
see what happens now if any smell of petrol
