Thinking of buying a new GS but unsure of the spec. Advice appreciated:

ABS - seems expensive but is this this something that you can't sell it on again without ?
Chrome exhaust pipe - what's the standard one like ?
BMW's panniers - any good or are there better ones available elsewhere ?

Thanks for your answers and sorry if they've been asked before !

Oooh now you're asking

Jeremy:

ABS - some love it, some hate it, some think you'll die if you have it
Chrome Exhaust - most seem to have it, unless you plan on an aftermarket one pretty soon
Panniers - best you do a search and read for days :D

Cheers :thumb

The chrome pipe means the exhaust turns blue rather than brown. I think it's heavier. Most have stainless steel.

I would encourage you to use the search facility for comments on BMW panniers and ABS. There's been many threads on these.

ABS : Saved my bacon in the wet.........some say the servo brakes are easier to lock than non-servo brakes, so ABS is good. I'll get ABS every time from now on, or only ride non-ABS in the dry or off road!

Pipes: My 1st 12GS bike had normal pipes, 2nd has chromed.
The chomed pipes are easier to clean and hold their finish better, so worth the extra

Panniers: Don't, whatever you do, under any circumstances, buy the BMW system top box.
Yes, I'm obsessed ;) ........see copious earlier posts on the subject!

Well these are personal pinions, but you did ask :D

ABS: not for me, did not like the feel on the demo bike when I managed to trigger it on a rumble strip and having read some of the comments on here decided to leave it off.

Chrome exhaust: Exactly what it says, the stock stainless steel headers are chromed, instead of going brown with use they turn blue. I was ditching the stock front pipes in favour of aftermarket cat free ones from Remus so went with stock. If I'd been keeping the standard pipes think I would have done without the chrome, I'm happy with brown pipes and long term less potential for corrosion.

Panniers: Oh lord press search on this one! Clever design with the adjustable sizing, to me however the one for the exhaust side loses a lot of space with the cut out. I went with Hepco and Becker aluminium luggage, but as I said initially it's a personal decision.

Good luck :thumb

Thanks for the opinions, just what I wanted

I've now found the FAQ section. I think that should keep me busy for a few hours ! Great site !

Just need to sell the 748 now
