Has anyone a copy of a successful e-mail to BMW for upgrading the tool kit, as I have a new bike for May 2006 which will come I am sure with the reduced tool kit etc.
BMW does not impress me with its new practice of less for more.

I got the 2nd key & later got the toolkit upgraded, key was easy but had a heated phone call to get the toolkit . To be honest i would have had it put in the deal with the new bike if i was you ,mine was one of the first to come with crap toolkit & one key even the dealer didnt know
BMW called it a good will jesture

Just got the chassis number for mine which is built in two weeks, wonder what I'll get considering it's coming from a German dealer?

I got my 1200 lasst week. 1 x key and bobbar toolkit.

spoke to my dealer - no joy but recommended I speak with BM Customer "Service"

did this, started out all nicey, nicey & got nowhere. got all heavy & serious & got nowhere too, other than refered back to my dealer as "BMW reserve the right to ammend specifications without prior . . . . etc, etc" Allegedly, BMW's customers would sooner call out the BMW Breakdown service rather than have a toolkit! I suggested that they had polled only over 55 RT owners.

My Trump Card Arguement went like this . . . "As BMW market the GS as a bike that can go where other's can't, like an adventure bike, then when I get a puncture up a mountain track or need to remove my plugs after a bad river crossing in the middle of nowhere, how do you propose that BMW Breakdown will rescue me and / or repair my bike? To which BMW Customer Service replied . . . . "BMW are only supplying a basic toolkit on their new bikes as their customers didn't require a toolkit" - which seems to be the parragraph that they're brainwashed with. I got absolutely nowhere, other than angry, bitter & twisted.

I spoke again with my dealer who advises that there is a "Supplimentary Toolkit" available to purchase for the princely sum of £45 + VAT. this kit contains all that's missing, except the Puncture Repair kit.

My advice is . . . When you're negotiating your deal for your new bike, request the toolkit!

I don't know what's involved with a mass protest / class action to BMW over this blatant cost cutting excercise but does anyone think it's worth it, on a principal basis rather than over a £45 + VAT item we've been swindled out of?

What do you want the tool kit for??
Its not for working on your bike is it??
God the capabilities of this man never cease to amaze me !! :clap

Used tool kit

Well actually I have used the tool kit as it happens Skywalker. My daughters boy friend was removing the cylinder head on her Corsa 16v sports super dooper car. All of a sudden he found he needed a T30 torks," I have one I replied" yes you have guessed correctly in my BMW tool kit. So no its not for the bike, that never breaks down, does it? oh after last time should I really have said that.

PS does John have to service my bike, having heard what he did to the credit card reader, is he safe?

I got my 1200 last July and it came with the single key and reduced toolkit. On checking the riders handbook, I found on page 28 that it mentioned that the bike comes with 2 master keys and one spare key. On the strength of that, I wrote to BMW and they replied promptly and told me to go to my dealer where they had arranged for me to get the second key and the enhanced toolkit, all at no extra cost.

I don;t know if they have changed the handbook for this year, but it is worth looking to see if it still mentions 2 master keys.

GS1200 Tool Kit

Please find below my e-mail to BMW, and the reply i recieved from them. I did get the better toolkit, although in all honesty, is not that much better.
This was my second e-mail, the first was a more polite one.

"Thank you for your e-mail, I am most disappointed with
your reply, I have bought a GS1200 to make a journey through South
America, and certainly for the amount of money I paid for the bike, I
expect to be supplied with a decent tool kit, If you are prepared to
tell me that I will not need tools for the trip, as the bike is
"maintenance free" then I will take your word for it, and just call you
if I have any problems. Is this agreeable to you? If not, then can I
please suggest that you ask BWM to provide me with a proper tool kit
for the bike.
I do not want to complain about this, but I have bought a
quality bike and I do expect to be provided with the accessories to go
with it.
If you are unable to provide me with a proper tool kit for
this bike then can you please provide me with a contact number to whom
I can lodge a more serious complaint?"

Reply:
Dear Sir
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the tool kit for your BMW 1200GS.
We have taken the opportunity to speak with your dealer and have authorised them to supply you with the extended toolkit free of charge.
In closing we are deeply sorry that you have had cause to contact us under such circumstances and we would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our notice. We can assure you of our attention, should the need arise at any stage in the future.
Regards
Customer Service Executive

So the moral is...keep at them, they should be providing you with a proper kit, these bikes are not cheap.. dont give them an easy time.

I've always said you prefered cars Martin or should i say Jeeps instead ? Didn't they tell you upstairs that the card readers are now water cooled ? yes he's perfectly safe even though he's from barnsley. Ask Sherpa what we did to his number plate - its been on for weeks & he's only just noticed !

yeah the handbook now says
"you receive one master key and one spare key"

doesnt mention the spare one is plastic.

Toolkits

Having had eight BMW's - each with an immaculate toolkit - much too nice to actually use - wouldn't it have been more sensible to offer a REDUCTION of £45 if the toolkit was not supplied? Six of the other bikes had first aid kits as well -and happily they remained unused also. (When my last but one bike did break down the main tool it needed was a trailer to get it to the nearest BMW agent and straight onto their computer! Incidentally most insurance here (I think) include breakdown assistance.
