Hi,
Are there any BMW mechanics out there or anyone who can answer my question.
Yesterday I checked the valve clearances on my camhead, R1200GSA TU as per Jim's DVD.
All were OK except the bottom two exhaust valves.
One was loose at slightly more than 0.4 and the other was difficult to measure as I will explain.
I took out both shims and they were 5.4 and 5.5 respectively.
So I put the 5.5 into the loose cam follower and bingo it was now between 0.3mm and 0.4mm.
I had difficulty measuring the nearside lower valve clearance because if I inserted the feeler gauge up or down it slipped in easily but on the outer edge it was tight, in other words verticaly on the forward edge of the follower it was slightly closer to the cam lobe, so I didn't know which measurement I should take the looser one or the tighter one. What I did in the end was to measure the gap between the end of the valve stem and the semisphere shim, which nessesitated bying a new shim from BMW to get that gap to between 0.3 and 0.4mm.
Any 'usefull' comments please.:nenau

Looking at these photos, http://sanjosebmw.smugmug.com/Other/Tech-pictures/10976964_HcSC4s#!i=767209614&k=WupU9 I cant see that it would make any difference as you are measuring the same gap, just at different place.
Your valve will still have its specified clearance.:flag

Dont know why your follower is not even across its width giving you a tight spot:nenau uneven wear maybe.

Thanks Kenny, that's what I was thinking. As for wear there is none on the follower or the lobe they are still flat and blued.
