1200GS Upgrading 2005 to 2010 model-worth it??

Have you thought of renting?

At the mileage you are doing, it would be cheaper to rent one when you need it rather than buy!
Myke

I traded off my '05 with 34k miles for a '10. If it had as low mileage yours does I probably wouldn't have done it, mainly because it appears your time may be limited. Every couple of years BMW makes some significant improvements in the GS. Wait until you have time to really enjoy your new bike.

That said, the '10 is a nice improvement in a few areas and most of my farkles transferred to it (which is how I convinced myself the '10 was a good idea...lol).

As far as the RON goes, it was my experience that the '05 would get better mileage when running the higher grade, but I didn't notice any performance improvement. I always used at least mid grade, and would tend to use the higher grade when doing large miles or in hot weather.

I currently have a 2005 1200GS which Ive owned from brand new and cherished over its 6000 miles or so and it is in like new condition.
I was thinking of upgrading to a 2010 model, again brand new and was wondering if there was a big difference between the 2 models and if the outlay was worth it to change(I'd estimate it would cost me around £5000)

I did it, but mine had 45,000 miles on it and was in excellent condition - but the new bike is much better so - YES!

Could you tell us why?:nenau

I took my 20,000 mile 07 1200GS in for it's brake pipe recall the other week and they gave me a 10 plate 1200GS as a loaner.
As a direct comparison:-
The new engine is smoother and pulls a lot stronger in the mid range:thumb2.
The standard screen was shite compared to my Ergo screen.
The 10 plate developed a slight front end headshake at around the three figure mark:augie (Tourance EXP's fitted on 10 plate, Tourance NON EXP on my own bike which has never had the same feeling).
The 10 plate had the lower seat option which gave me knee pains after 30 miles (standard seat on my own bike and only get knee pains after 300 miles or so).
Apart from that they felt like the same bike which isn't enough to get my hand in my pocket to trade up:nenau

Why don't ya take a test ride and judge for yourself :augie

Best regards Stretch :D

Thats what i'm scared of. Bought last of the slow :augie ones last year and dont really want to spend another 2.5k if its soooooo much better :D

I will do the test ride but wanted other opinions

I won't be upgrading from my 09... definately not enough difference ... apart from the price ;)

PHEWWW. Hope so .

Maybe i wont have a test ride :blast.

Which dealer did you go to Bryn ?

Had a go on the 2010 today but I wont be buying one.

The engine certainly pulls harder from 3000 but doesnt seem to have the top end power of my 09. I accept the bike only had 500 miles on it so still alittle tight.

I climbed back on mine and actually preferred it :blast

Have you thought about going for the new GSA instead of a GS? I think the new GSA is bloody brilliant :thumb2

The only thing that could make it better would be to have the acceleration of my K6 Gixxer 1000 lol :P

Spend some money on remus decat headers and a pcv with autotune and have more power through out the rev range than a 10 for around £600 with out the added complication of sticky exhaust valves and servos, then save your money for the wasser boxer:thumb2

I recently traded my basic early 2004 (04 plate) model 1200 with ABS, luggage and almost 40k on it for a fully loaded 2008 (58 plate) GSA with luggage and 9k on it.

Total cost to change was £5k.

The new bike is a major improvement IMO.

Your call.:nenau

Used residuals are very firm at the moment due to the value of Sterling against the Euro plus a hungry foreign market for UK bikes.

The biggest single difference when comparing to my 2005 model is the bigger chunk of torque at low revs (below 4,000) and its ability to run down to lower speeds before one has to slip the clutch to stop the juddering - this makes it a whole lot nicer around town and at low speeds - one can ride along in first gear at tick-over on a closed throttle with no stuttering (tick-over revs same as 2005 model).
I can't comment on the very top end because I don't go there very often, but the extra power would suggest that this ought to be a tad better too.

Plus points.
Engine, Engine, Engine.
Gearbox better than 2005 model
Sounds far sexier.
Side panels won't come off and act as air-brakes!
Knobs to adjust the screen are much better.
Much easier to put on centre stand.

Minus points.
Mirror mounting not as good as 2005 bike - seems to come lose more easily and are difficult to re-tighten and set to desired position.

The single main improvement is the engine - far better than the 2005 model - it's worth upgrading for this alone.

Keep it, but . . .

. . . I would probably not have changed if my old bike had such low milage and I used it so little.

But, hey, if you want it and you can afford it then why not.
:beerjug:

Head says keep it, but Heart may say change. In May 2007 I acquired an 06 GS with 4,500 miles as I needed more comfort and decided it was "fast enough". I don't get out much either, so it has just turned 12,000 miles. I have no intention to change, but if I win the lottery or it ever pisses me off again (EWS!) it may get binned for something newer.

ps - it don't say Carpe Diem for nothing either :)

Yep got the decat , going for the pc V and autotune next . Think that will give me a nice linear power curve.

Have you fitted one and what do you think ?

Ive done the same mod to my 2009 R1 and it has transformed the bike.

Hopefully the same for the GS.:thumb

The position you are in is that you know your 05 GS works and is reliable this is worth a lot and so should be factored into your thinking.

There is a very big difference, the twin cam is brilliant but has a higher compression ratio and more complexity, it probably represents the boxer engine at its hight of development. The 2010 GS was a technical update model very soon we should have a brand new model and it may be worth waiting a bit longer by which time the reliability of the twin cam will have been tested.

No it's not worth £5k to change, for £5k you can get a very nice second bike that will out perform any boxer engined bike and may be worth a look.
