A GS'er elsewhere issued a warning about winglets breaking loose ripping the plastic fairing if not attached by metal bracket as in the GSA.

Has anyone had this problem or know a fix? :clap

Never had an issue wih the winglets on my 2006 GS, fitted them with 25mm stainless steel washers with a 6mm center hole to spread the load and not an issue with them at any time including over in Europe at speeds of 3 figures :augie

As long as they are fitted to spread the load the plastic is more than up to the job.

I asked NippyNorman about this who shares your views. :thumb

it would be normal (and wise) practice to stengthen a thin metal or plastic surface that had to be drilled and then have bolts and nut attached, especially if there was any type of pulling strain on that surface.

When securing anything to a thin surface an easy way to overcome this problem would be to use an over size washer or a piece of plate metal. This would spread the load. I would suggest for the winglets you find the largest washer that fits under the palstic, or cut up some 1.5 or 2 mm aluminium sheet and place under the plastice as a washer. Very simple and it works.

I removed the winglet nut and had forgottent I had already installed a large metal washer but since this was only the size of the US quarter I replaced it with 25mm. I also found some rubber grommets which Iput on the top interface. That should take care of it ....:beerjug:

Hi,
On the last GS's before the facelift BMW had already changed the way the winglets were fixed on the inside. Instead of the not-so-dependable plastic half-turn screw, a torx-bolt is used, and screwed into a clipon nut.

The picture shows the left wing from the inside with the solution.

Partnumbers for 2 wings are :
- 2 Torx-bolts nr. 06327657966
- 2 clip-on nuts nr. 61131372033
- 2 discs
Fits all R12GS's from 2004-2007.

Real easy solution to have peace of mind, available at your BMW dealer.;)

On my 08 GS I fitted the winglets with bolts through the metal bracket already fitted and drilled for the purpose! Just marked the underside of the plastic beak - took it off - drilled it from the underside and refitted.

Holes line up perfectly for the NN Winglets.:beerjug:

Hi Fellas. Following up on an old thread here, but does anyone know whether the 'disc' is a plain washer, plastic washer or something a little more sophisticated?

Cheers

Rich.

13000 miles on a 08 GSA and no problems and I don't hang about! I did put in a warranty claim when one started to lightly shatter around the fixing holes but I put that down to the cold weather because similar happened to my Buell screen under similar conditions.

I used NN's own just fitted onto plastic on a GS - no trouble after 15,000 fastish miles.
