Hi guys,

A mate of mine bought his brand new 12GSA last November, as a first time biker (brave, but I can't think of a better bike).

He's done 6000 miles to date, taken the bike back to his dealer for a new pair of boots, and they've now given him a bill for £530.... wait for it....this was reduced from £700!!!!

They've said as well as new tyres, he needed new pads, and a new back brake disk too. And because it's under warranty, he can only go with them for new tyres, as they're claiming only BMW can remove the rear wheel otherwise it invalidates the warranty.

Is it just me, or does this whole thing stink like a week month old kipper?!!!!

In my mind, a pair of Metzeller Tourances should be around £200 plus fitting, pads around £25/30, and the disk, at just 6000 miles, well, unless he's been riding around with the rear brake stuck on, then the disk can't possibly be needing a replacement at such low mileage. My 1150GSA (heavier bike, requires more wear and tear on brakes to stop it) has done over 23k miles, and is still on original disks (albeit second set of pads all round).

I smell a rat.

Comments and experiences welcome please!

we've had a couple of people that have had problems with the discs warping - they have all been replaced under warranty

Disc should be under warranty.

Anybody can remove the wheels and fit tyres without invalidating the warranty.

Tyres should be sub £200 fitted.

Pads £14 and take 10 minutes to fit.

Sounds like a £500 robbery.

Name the dealer.

:rob

Come on....... tell us who the dealer is... who ever it is is talking utter bollox regarding the tyres......:ronno

It all sounds fishy to me....

....the disc should be replaced under warranty if warped...and there have been some posts in the past where there have been issues with being charged for new pads when this work has been done.

As the discs have to be replaced when fitting new discs, then this should be seen as part of the warranty claim...

...I believe this case has been successfully argued by other GS'ers...and rightly so.

As for the wheel removal....that is total tosh!!!

you are correct sir,
i guess you meant to say pads,:augie

i bought rear pads from the dealer for both of our adventures, they cost £50.00 a pair which i thought was ridiculous, will get some EBC HH off ebay next tome for about £17-20.00,
our pads had worn down to metal doing 200 miles of off road in deep mud at easter, lightly scored both of our rear discs but i've not replaced them yet, just stuck the new pads in.
just wondered if your mate had done the same and thats why they want to charge him for the disc and labour

Anyone who takes their bike to a main dealer for tyres deserves what they get!!

My bet is that he never checked the rear pads................they wore down to the metal within 6000 miles and scored the rear disc badly

Therefore owner error and negligence............................so no BMW warranty would be forthcoming and rightly so

Disc warping is another issue and from the facts stated, probably wasn't the case and disc damage caused by no friction material on the rear pads

As for the tyre issue.......................the issue of wheel removal is shite, invalidatiing warranty and as to the cost of tyres.....................he should have sought the OP's advice, if he was new to bikes

Tyres...................yep he's been shafted

Rear Disc.....................nope, sounds like operator negligence

Any dealer I've ever been to whether bike or car has always asked me first before carrying out any extra work. I'm assuming they did this with your mate and in that case he's only got himself to blame. if they didn't ask first then he's not legally obliged to pay for the work other than the tyres.
Also you should always ask about price of things(inc. tyres) before agreeing to have them fitted.
As for taking the rear wheel off voiding warranty, total bs. Name and shame.

"He's done 6000 miles to date"

New to biking eh.... my GSA was still on OE pads at 17500 miles, how do you get through a set of rear pads in 6,000 miles...ride the brakes all the time...perhaps someone should show him how to ride!! :comfort

If it was off road....ok

Re killing rear disc. My first GS needed warranty work after 4000 and I was amazed to be asked if I wanted the rear pads replaced as they were on their last legs. I think the problem was two fold. Firstly GSs have a reputation for rear pads that just about last from service to service. Secondly, I was new to a bike which had linked brakes so tended to use the rear pedal a lot. Since then I have hardly ever touched the rear pedal and the pads last OK. New GSA has done 8000 and is still on first set.

Maybe a new rider, again not used to linked brakes, would be very heavy on the pads and go metal to metal in under 6000 which results in a disc change.

Re tyres and pad prices. Anyone going to a main dealer to buy tyres should not be allowed out without a minder. Pretty much the same with pads. I had to change the front pads on the old GS at very short notice. I could not wait for mail order so used BMW. £96.00 for a set was really taking the piss. I normally spend around £40.00.

the missus and I both wanted TKC's put on for easter for the off road stuff in belgium, my usual tyre dealer couldn't get anyway near as low as what wollastons charged us for 2 sets so we got them there, ( he reckons they must have sold them at almost cost price as he couldn't even buy them for what they wanted )
need tourances back on now for a trip to the pyrenees during whitsun and my dealer is about £45.00 cheaper this time,
BTW I always take the loose wheels in and they usually charge a lot less for the fitting,
always best to get a few quotes before fitting:thumb2

What then ever happened to "reading the road ahead"... pro active riding & using the engine to do some of the retarding ...... 6000mls on a set of rear pads is a fcucking disgrace !!!

rear pads

Always some clever bugger who rides better than everybody else,
The early gs 1200 were wearing rear pads because putting the linked front brake on lightly activates the rear brake only, wearing it out in under 6000 miles, hard braking puts front and rear on, i have never used the rear brake and it still wears them out aprox 6000,
Strangely enough my bike is still on the second front set of pads and has done 101,000 miles, what is that all about

that would explain how both me and the missus wore out our rear pads in belgium then, i checked both sets when putting the new tyres on and they had loads of life left in them.
800 miles later with nearly 200 in deep mud and water off road and upon checking them both when we got home i noticed they were both down to metal on the offside pad.
i barely touched the back brake off road and rarely on the road cos of my fused right ankle (not easy for me to do standing on the pegs) but i guess feathering the front brake must have been mostly using the rear then.
interesting:thumb2

This guy has a new GS, so old problems with wearing out pads DO NOT APPLY!!!! and yes there is always someone who rides better than you, who ever you are!!!!:comfort

Linked brakes?

Just a quick question while were on the subject....my GS/A was ordered without Traction control , ESA or ABS mainly as i'm a luddite and i want less things to wear out go wrong(didn't like the ABS on my K100 either) am i right in thinking my brakes are not linked?
