Hi,

My 2007 1200GS Adv has just reached 24,000 miles, and if I really push it (not often) the clutch does start to slip.

I'm planning a trip to the Alps in a month or so, say around 2500 miles in total.

My gut feeling says to leave the clutch until a later date, as I 'slip' the clutch very little - only really when pulling away.

I'm waiting for a reply from my local (Bristol Motorrad) dealer, but was interested to hear what sort of figure I'd be looking at for a clutch replacement :nenau

Advice appreciated,

Cheers,

greasy B.

In the Alps the clutch will get 100% more hammering than in the UK. If there's any doubt I'd change before I left, but then the working out who's going to pay ....:nenau

If the clutch only slips when pulling away, probably the clutch is not worn out. The true test of a worn out clutch is accelerating hard on the motorway in top gear.

If it slips on pullaway only, it could be a bent lever, badly positioned stoneguard, etc.

Take it to the dealer and ask them if you're not confident about tackling it yourself.

Complete clutch replacement costs about 600-800 quid depending on where yuo get it done and which other parts are required.

HTH,

David

It's a long shot, but I had a very similar problem on a Goldwing a few years ago.

It turned out to be contaminated hydraulic clutch fluid. When was your's last changed?

Hope this helps

Mike

Possible leaking gearbox input seal?

Any sign of oil mist in the join between the back of the engine and the gearbox? Is there any oil wetness on the back of the engine above the sump guard?

Leaking seals is a common problem- had mine changed and a new clutch friction plate done at RGM- cost me just short of £400.

Depends how old the bike is / warranty, but its always worth finding a good local independent- RGM in the north west is excellent- there are also excelent recommendations all over this site. Sure there will be one near you.

Thanks for the advice - think it makes alot of sense to get the clutch done before I go on me hol's :thumb

Can anyone recommend a decent independant in the Bristol area, say 30 mile radius or so:nenau
