1200GSA extended warranty option - any opinions?

My 1200GSA is 15k miles and 2yrs old in January'09 and has had ZERO problems since day one. The letter arrived today offering an extended warranty for £310. Can't see the point in changing the bike as it ticks every box for me.

I realise asking if its worth it depends on what goes wrong. More interested to hear if there are likely issues that might arise that would make it worthwhile.

My view is to not to take it up.

How much is a gearbox, a clutch, ABS contol, rear bevel :eek:

IMHO it's just like insurance, don't want to pay it, but when you need it, it's worth every penny, but YMMV.
 
Not a GSA answer as such, but the bike I currently have needed the gearbox/engine oil seals replacing at the end of the third year. Done before the clutch got contaminated, so I think the work cost the warranty lot under £500.

Not a hint of any problem before that, only noticed the accumulation of oil underneath when I went looking for it.

Your choice fella, but for the sake of £300 it might save you a hell of a lot more if say you get an engine or drive failure, something that whilst not common are not unheard of.

I would never own another BMW that hadn't got a warranty.
 
I will face the same decision as 'Jeremy' in June 2009 when my 2007 GSA with currently 18000 mile on it leaves its warranty period.

I am thinking extending the period, however, I believe the extended scheme is NOT offered by BMW but in effect an insurance company. If so I suggest any claims made might not be as easy as when going through the initial BMW waranty...............Just my tuppence worth !!!!!

£310.. that all!

would even pay that for the R1150GSA! I think thats a bargain...

My mate took out the extended warranty on his 06 GSA. The bike was in getting a 24k service recently, when the mechanic noticed that the gearbox oil seals were on the way out. Replaced no problem under the warranty. Would have been a rather costly job otherwise.
 
I haven't got the extended warranty on my 54 plate 1200, because the price was over £600 at the time. If the cost had been £310 as it is now, I wouldn't have hesitated. This thread has set me wondering what might happen to bikes under warranty as they get older. As already pointed out it is an insursance based scheme, and as far as I can remember fair wear and tear comes into it at some point, and I'm wondering what might happen if a claim was made for example on a 4 year old bike for a gear box issue. Might it be rejected due to fair wear and tear? As already stated doesn't affect me, but I would be interested to hear what others think.

assistance with it too dont you? that alone probably £100 worth
 
look at it like this 8p a day after all its a BMW & they do go wrong & when they do go its big ££££££££££££££ TAKE IT
 
just to complicate matters...

anecdotal evidence suggests that bmw are pretty good with goodwill contributions on known faults (that's pretty much anything) out of warranty, as long as it's been serviced by their dealers.

There's plenty of anecdotal evidence out there showing the opposite also, maybe not in the same quantity but it does happen.
Want to take that chance?

I pay £31 a month which seems easier:thumb

if you sell the bike to can cancel the payments

nope, i got the extended warranty, but i don't think it's a cut and dried proposition.

Not in my case.

Had to have a rear engine/clutch seal replaced with bike 3 months out of warranty.

Cost for replacement/repair £240.

Requested goodwill contribution as bike had full service history etc but this was declined as bike was deemed to high mileage at 23k. :(

Don't pay £310 and you run the potential risk of a far bigger bill. Pay it, you don't. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.:nenau
 
Slightly similar, but different. Have the British Gas heating insurance, about £15 a month and didn't claim on it for a couple of years, so wondered if we should keep paying. This year, so far, we've had two radiators and a hot store tank replaced :eek: Hot store tank would have been about £1000 trade :eek:

Glad we didn't try and save £15 a month :)

Lot of it comes down to how lucky you feel!
