I've noticed recently that when my bike is parked up during a rainstorm - particularly on its sidestand -that the fuel cap allows in water to such a degree that it pools in the groove around the filler cap housing in the top of the tank. Is there any short or long term implication of water mixing with petrol? Has anybody else had a similar problem?

Should drain out using the drain. If it doesn't then try blowing gently the wrong way, or try some thin wire / cable to unblock it.

Internal combustion engines don't like running on water, and metallic componenets in the tank won't be too happy either.

I got told to put a cap full of pure alcohol in the tank every few months to help remove any water in the tank/fuel system.

Dunno if this is an old wives tale or not:confused: Perhaps the learned could comment.......

Be an easy thing to check...

Clear glass full of petrol

drop of water... (see it?)

Cap full of alcohol... Stirr... let sit... (see it?)

If not it works... Firsts person to try this, post up so we don't all have to get our fingers smelly...

Al...

Alcohol absorbs water....main ingredients used in gas line anti-freeze.

There must be a problem with the drain line as in mine if I overfill the tank and gasolene accumulates above the drain hole, it just stays there. I tried forcing compressed air in the drain hole and it seems to be open, so the routing of the drain may create an air lock. Will check this whwen its due for the 10000km service.

I wouldn`t worry too much about it. Mine does the same and no problems.

You may want to check with your local friendly dealer who will no doubt say "they all do that sir"!

Fuel Cap Drain

I carried out the fuel cap vent mod today and found that the drain pipe from the fuel cap was blocked. I cleared it with a piece of wire and an air line. I reckon the drain pipe will block up again in no time as it is a crap design. Does it really matter????

Yeah, coz eventually that water finds its way into your petrol, where it sits on top sloshing around and building up, and then one day it'll manage to get into your fuel filter and cause all sorts of crappy running which will baffle everyone for at least an hour of workshop time. (Because it seems the fuel filter is the last thing they ever bloody check, grrr)

Cas :)

yes it is a known problem

currently awaiting the resolution from NOG to fix it.

two different allows used in the filler/drain assembly and hence the two corrode.

You can clear it with wire, solves the symptom, or you could go back to your dealer and get them to agree to chase down a replacement part. i am still waiting to get the call to get it replaced. mind you

when i fill up and the bike has been standing i get a few sheets of the blue roll they have on the forecourt standing by to mop uo the water before it drips into the tank and settles there for ever and a day

Just had a 6000 mile service (at NOG) and new filler neck fitted. It has a different part number so is probably a modification :thumb2
