1200GSA Onboard Computer

My bike was serviced yesterday and I got my dealer to have a look at this "problem". He downloaded some new software and filled up the tank to full to "teach the guage where full really is".

On leaving the dealership the computer suggested that there was 430 miles of fuel left in the tank. Got home (55 miles) and now have 480 miles of fuel left.:augie Bloody brilliant these BMVV's, creating fuel.

I'll let you know how I get on over the next few days.

22 mpg!!!

was what the display on my 2006 GS12A was telling me for a long time!

when purchased it varied around the low 40s and then crept up to 50mpg as it was being run in, which seemed to tally with the reality.

During a tour of europe which took the bike from 5k to 10k miles, the computer showed a steady decline down to 22 mpg:eek:, where it stayed. the actual mpg was around mid-40's, and the range computer was giving approximately 300 miles to the tank, which was more or less correct.

the battery was flat at the start of this year, so i removed it, charged it and reinstalled it. since then the mpg reading has been much more representative of the reality, in the high-40's.

oh, and the most i've done after the computer thought the tank was empty is 40 miles. just to see if it was lying....

Yep, similar error with the range on mine.

The MPG prediction seemes to be fairly accurate in that it quickly picks up on changes in riding style, but the range prediction seems to be naff when you need it most. In the interest of science, I tried riding as carefully as possible (most fuel efficient) when my tank was nearly empty and found the range drops four times faster than the miles clock up????

It might not be very accurate but I guess I wouldn't want the error the other way round!

its making its own fuel !!!!!!

me too.

two week old 08 gsa with all options ticked. i completely inderstand how the bike works out roughly how far you can get on the fuel you have according to your current riding conditions/style. i have no problem with this or a little indiscrepency as am used to bmw car range which is brilliant, however check this out.

picked the bike up with a full tank of fuel. 370 miles showing on range computer.
170 miles later half tank showing on fuel gauge and 200 miles on range. = perfect.
switch bike off and put in garage overnight. wake up start bike and guage is on 1 bar and range is at seventy nine miles. fuel is not on garage floor and my garage is elf proof so no thieving little elves have stolen it. =worrying.

wait for bike to warm up etc as i'm aware of cold bike causing a slight miss read so ignore guage etc.

started riding and fuel light came on. i ignored this as i was told i would get at least 350 miles from an 08 gsa.
Fuel dropped to 43 miles on range and single bar on fuel guage.

Then the fuel guage rose to two bars and range is now back up to 79 miles fuel light off....... !!!!!.

odometer now on 250 miles travelled. now forgive me but this means my bike has done the last 80 miles using absolutely no fuel. I do intend taking this machine to morrocco and this is worrying me tremendously.

how can this be fixed. 80 miles on 0 fuel is not an oversight or within tolerance..... does this mean my guage basically doesnt work below half a tank or what. my gixer thousand was deadly accurate on its fuel meter. . . . i expect more from an otherwise perfect bike that cost me £13000 pounds.

please help

Hi

I have a -07 with the onboard computer and it behaved the same way. After about 5000 km it suddenly started to be correct.Maybe it is something that calibrates it self . According to the manual it schould be 4 liter left in the tank when the light goes on.Mine is about 6 liters left when the light goes on .Another thing that i always do is that i put it on the centerstand when fueling. The sidestand is short so the right part of the tank might not be filled.
/FÅ

I sometimes get a similar though not quite as pronounced effect on the RT. Don't know the GSA set up (until tomorrow ) but did you leave the bike on the sidestand and did the guage sort itself out once you hit the twisties?

If so, I suspect the guage is on the RHS of the tank and fuel was trapped on the left side.

At least 350 miles  try cruising at 80 mph on the autobahns and see how far you go!

Deadly accurate fuel gauge, it's there to give an "indication" of fuel contents, and once you get to know the bike you'll get to know what the "indications" are indicating. Put some more miles on the bike, use one of the trips to see how the gauge / mpg / range indicates, and then try to stop worrying too much.

fair point john..... i am an easy going kind of guy but I'm not familiar with the bike and NEED to know how far i can go as there are a lot less petrol stations in the desert which is where this will be going.

I suppose i'll just have to fill a 5ltr petrol can and see how far the bike will go till it dies and then use trip from there....

never had to do that before.....!

i'm not saying the bike is rubbish . far from it what im simply asking is how do i fix it...

after all this bike is meant to be able to cross continents and a petrol guage that works would be nice. most other bikes seem to get it right and this bike has been in production for over 4 yrs now. i dont need it to be deadly accurate but showing empty with half the contents left in the tank is clearly a fault which should be fixed

other than that its the best bike i've owned so far........
