1250 to 1300-Is it worth the upgrade ?

People are sucked in to a shiny new bike each year...then, unless they sit down and do a grown up thing and have a good 10 minute think....they repeat each 2 to 3 years with the sale bods assuring them it's a great idea and is only an extra £15 a month etc....smoke and mirrors....until anyone sits down and does the maths.

Yeah I get that and was just replying to @pbbanks. I guess they wanted something approaching the bling on the Tarantula to compare with even though the extra strap ons make no difference to how it rides.

Its only money ... who cares . I buy mine cash and as I leave the dealers I throw £50 notes in the air for the poor PCP ers as Im a Tosser of the highest order , I'll have you know.

Good write up ! 15 hp and 7 nm more at the business end where the rubber meets the road equals 151 hp and 150 nm torque if you take the 1250 136 hp / 143 nm as a baseline…So far so good , But as I said before the weight is the same as before unless you get the roughly 2 kilos per wheel lighter forged wheels…The S1000 sport screen is nice and so is the GS-ADV tank compartment…But a exhaust that is quieter than the mechanical noise from the engine and a tank that has only 19 liters instead of lets say 24 liters need to be addressed immediately which would be easy to do by BMW & Akrapovic…Until then I keep my 1250 GS ! Hola from mexico…

And I really dont want another GSADV as after 4 years on the GS-HP with ADV suspension I learned to appreciate the smaller size and slightly lighter weight so BMW has to give us a medium tank in between as a option and make the engine more soulful with a better sounding exhaust and hopefully longer stroke for a full 1400 cc ! Never understood why they went from 76mm where I hoped they would give us 78 to 80 mm stroke back to the old short 73 mm from the days of the 1200…Especially considering how relatively low the GS revs…!

Blimey, when you look at the PCP figures, if you keep the bike at the 3 yr mark you'll pay c£27k for it....hand it back and you've only spent £14700 but walk away empty handed....(stick to the mileage and each one has cost you £1.23...£410pcm incl the deposit) Utter madness IMHO

Remember….PCP is designed to separate idiots from money, not to save it for them. I’d rather not have a bike rather than just rent it.

Or just buy what you can afford. I’ve nearly always bought new, cars and bikes but tend to change them around the 10 year mark and have always managed to get a trade in value of 50% of the purchase price. Only ever used PCP to get discount via the deposit contribution or extended warranty. It’s worked for me but know know a lot of folk want the latest and greatest every year or so. Each to their own, if you can afford the PCP and you’re happy why not? I waste my money in other ways, you can’t take it with you in the end.

Does anyone know what the average depreciation figure is on motor bicycles these days, especially the GS/A?

You used to be doing well if you could recover 50% after 3 years (on a car, anyway) what is it currently?
The figures might be skewed as of now due to the used car price madness of the last couple of years - has it affected bike prices too?

Don’t think it’s too unusual. See similar examples in posts on here regularly. E.g. 2001 R1150GS purchase price in 2001 just under £8k, look at recent adverts in the ‘ For Sale’ section 23 years later.

My most recent was a R1200GSA purchased in new 2012 with full luggage for £12,500, traded for a KTM 1290SAS in 2021 for £6k c50% (actual 48%). Again look in the for sale section and you’ll see similar bikes for a similar price.

BMW dealers are now heavily discounting 1250’s. Full luggage & £6,000 off list now is the minimum anyone can negotiate, that’s for cash not PCP.

Agree cars are a different thing, although way back in the 80s I bought a new Ford Escort for £4,174 and traded it 8 years later for £2k. All my other cars I’ve ran into the ground over 12-15 years, but still managed to get a decent price for them. I’ve never traded in after 3 years or less so haven’t had to deal with the 50%+ depreciation in that time.

It will vary between manufacturers and individual models. A well looked after low milage GS will retain its value quite well, but a price of a new one will have gone up too especially since covid so it's more about the cost to change IMO.

Your not the only one, confused myself! Overall I’ve done ok and not suffered heavy losses when changing cars or bikes. Back to the thread, buy anything on PCP and fall into the cycle it will cost you.
