I want to give my first impressions of my recent 1250GS test ride, and before I get a barrage of abuse I've had an old GS (1150) for some time and love it and have ridden the later twin cam 1200 model which was also great.
But, I was immediately a bit disappointed by the 1250 for the following reasons.
Firstly, the quickshifer was virtually unusable due to the stiffness of the change when not using the clutch (obviously)! Oddly when using the clutch the gearbox was pretty slick so I can only imagine it is related to the actuation or the gearbox design?
Secondly, with a cold engine there was a bizarre vibration through the footpegs which disappeared once warm and I guess either gearbox or shaft drive?
Also, I found the Auto setting on the suspension great until you started pushing on hard when the bike became unstable and a bit unpredictable. Changing to Dynamic helped but the bike was then too firm for 'normal' riding.
Related to this, I found the ABS over sensitive even in Dynamic mode, when using a bit of rear brake to help settle bike when pushing on it seemed to want to lock the rear and upset the composure of the bike, which was a bit disconcerting.
I also found the mode button irritating in that I had to push it several times for it to do anything.

On the plus side the fuelling is beautiful, the engine is better than previously by some margin in real world riding with bags of mid-range, the suspension is very good (generally), the brakes are great, especially initial bite and the thing is as comfortable as ever.

Now, I realise where I am posting this and would reiterate that I love the GS range but I was somewhat underwhelmed by the bike and am interested if anyone has had similar findings with their 1250?
This was a brand new 1250 Rallye with 270 miles on by the way. It also only did 36 mpg whilst in my hands :(

I would finally add that I've been riding motorcycles for about 40 years, including motorcross/enduro and track riding so I'm not exactly new to this game :)

I'm hoping the bike was a Friday afternoon build, interestingly the dealer took it straight into the workshop after I reported the issues as mentioned above, but in typical BMW sales patter he'd never heard of any of the issues I'd mentioned!! :)

Well glad I bought a 1250 RT then. Gear shift pro, brilliantly smooth, although you do have to know how to use it. Engine smooth with no vibration at all. No issue with the ABS kicking in, but I have only done 2.5k so maybe not used to it yet :)

My GS Exclusive is the same, wonder what im doing wrong ?

Come out with I’ll bust yer cherry , an 1150 compared to the 1250 , get a grip or put the meths down ..it’s not a barrage I just think think your talking bollox , no offence :beerjug:

36mpg ?? Fuck me what were you doing to it to get that sort of figure ?
I get that on my GSA for the weekly commute. 24-36mpg. Not all of us ride like old men

I tested and bought the 1250 GSA, on the basis of the quick shifter, suspension, engine, hill start are all a country mile better than the previous versions, which I felt were probably designed by John Deere. As Casbar said, you do need to know how to use the GSAP, which is still not as good as a Ducati’s but it’s certainly acceptable.

Best get a ktm as I believe they are much better :D

Well that was interesting if my 1250 test ride was anything like that I would never have bought mine, as casbah states re the gearbox quick shifter you have to have an understanding of how to use it both going up and coming back down the gears, again I came from the XR so know a thing or two about vibrations and mine is vibration free. I have ridden several BMW bikes and even owned my fair share and cannot compute how you can engage the abs whilst feathering the rear brake.
In conclusion to your informative review you either, A had a lemon or B can’t ride properly.
Any how I’m rather pleased with mine lol

Well I kind of expected that, well some of it, no need for the abuse. Typical responses from GS owners in the main. That particular bike was fundamentally flawed with all of the above. Yes I rode it very hard, I use a quickshifer on a daily basis that works and ride my 200+ brake sports bike also so please don't talk down to me. Anyone thinking they could bust my cherry would be very embarrassed!!
It was constructive criticism.

So it was a lemon then and not you glad that’s established, I don’t understand the reference to bust your cherry and embarrassment I think some think your review is so wildly off the mark they imagine you are taking the proverbial piss.
However if as you state it was so bad then you are just giving an honest review.

In the nicest way nutty , get back to you own forum , or I may need to use the f word as you and 2 posts talk shit , you perhaps more than him , or is he just one of your other gimps lol:beer:

:comfort :D :JB

I can’t understand how the abs was locking up the back wheel. Surly only the abs wasn’t working or switched off. In reality it was your over enthusiastic use of the brake pedal. If the abs was over sensitive the wheel would never lock up. JJH
