1290 SD screen on the 1190

Theres a guy on Adventure Rider (Italian chap) who's said you also need the instrument/headlight surround. It seems to be two piece but goes all the way down between the forks... I'm not averse to experimenting but it looks like you'll have to take a significant part of the bike to bits to replace that....Any thoughts?

I'm going off the idea....

i've been following that thread and i fear the amount of work to replace the headlight shell + the spiralling cost of course is putting me right off. i haven't priced up the adjusters yet, let alone the headlight shell.

like Davy F, i'm beginning to think that keeping it simple might be the way to go. at least you get full adjustment, and the screen is not set high because of the design of the factory spacers. a pity, as i really fancied fitting the SA mask.

Me too.. Given up and replaced the standard mask this afternoon. It's not only the cost but taking the entire front end of the bike to bit!

I think the windscreen adapters are worth having as they space the 1290 screen out nicely and the adjustment works full height with the adapters in the high or low position. Think I'm going to stick with that... Just have to sell the mask now and see if someone else wants to give it a go.

Screen arrived and has duly been fitted. I spaced the screen out with rubber washers, but really need four longer bolts and slightly deeper rubber spacers. I do have full up and down movement, but the screen is just touching the headlight mask when all the way down. Shouldn't be too hard to fully sort out. :D

So Davey ....

Are those pics with it as low as it will go ?? and more importantly (!) is it better than the vario you just flogged ..??

(That's a serious question 'cos I'm going to get one or t'other ... )

It's not set at its lowest in the pics. More small adjustments/alterations required before I'm happy. I haven't tried it out yet as it has been pishing down and I'm a girl !!

Well get yer sorry ass out there tomorrow and report back please - I'm especially keen to know how it compares to the Vario ... :thumb2

Pics showing highest and lowest settings. As I've said, it requires a bit more fiddling with and I'm going to get longer bolts and space it out about another 10 cms.

Aha ... yes, that looks better in the lower position. Set your alarm Davey .... you're going riding in the morning ... !!

Ok, here's what I've now done. Cut some gas rubber pipe to make washers for between the nut head and the screen, even better that it comes in Orange. :D
Bought four well nuts along with the button head stainless screws and tightened the whole lot on to the screen arms. Doing this has brought the screen out, IMO, perfectly. I now have full height adjustment. Well, almost, as with the screen fully down (about another 2 or 4 mms ) the screen edge at each corner in the middle section touches the top edge of the light mask. If it wasn't painted orange it wouldn't bother me, but it is, so it does. Therefore, I'll keep it just raised a tad up and in reality, it isn't a massive amount.

I do like how it looks on the bike and it wasn't to spendy overall.
All I need to do now is wait for the torrential rain to bugger off and get out and test it. It'll be interesting to see how it compares with the 1290SA and its larger mask/screen. I'm not expecting Gold Wing levels of comfort, just better than the standard screen offering will do.

Sheesh ...

We'll just have to wait another day then ..... :D

I've got mine on the extra brackets.... Did 100 miles up to work and back yesterday with the brackets and screen in the high position and if was lovely.. VERY smooth airflow, little if any buffet at 80-90mph and overall a great success (even without the mask fitted...)

I'll be interested to see what Davy thinks...

Well, also got to try it out. Compared to the standard screen, a definite improvement both in lower and higher positions. It works best with a normal full face lid. My new Hornet Adv lid is better than my previous TourX. Ultimately, everything will depend on the riders height and body position, but otherwise I'm happy enough.

Davey, how does it compare with the vario ... ?

I would say that it's a close run thing. It would equal the Vario in the lowest position and be a tad better in the higher position at (warp) speed. Looks wise, to me, the SA screen wins.

Well give me first dibbs if your new bike plans go ahead .... :thumb2

(I'm guessing a 1290 ... !?!)
