Dear Giles

I read your post as I left work this evening and have been reflecting upon your words all the way home.

You are right, of course, and I'm really not sure what came over me. It's possible that the burst of testosterone released by my pissing contest with Flipfly was still having a negative effect upon my psyche and natural peace loving state. I feel it has violated my hippy code and flies in the face of all the diversity training I have had.

I think, also, if I am really honest it was the the way you mentioned that you were 'thinking fondly' of Mellors. I had hoped that the time we whiled away together at the NEC would maybe make you feel differently about such things................. Still, it is of no matter, I apologise unreservadly and to make it up to you will send you pictures of my Wings exhaust once fitted to my lovely KTM.

Yours
Andres

I don't understand the pissing contest bit. I'm commenting on the bike named in the thread, you are commenting on your older (and better IMHO) 1190 model :blast
The 1190 for me doesn't have the visual appeal, for me, of the older bike, but at least it isn't cartoon sized.

Poor choice of words - what I meant was I don't normally rise to the bait of arguing over what's a good bike/bad bike/ blah blah blah. Too much negativity man and Giles has brought me up short before it all got out of hand, bless him :)

I was more impressed with the 1050 Adventure. Nice and light and well priced.

It's only 5kg lighter than the 1190. The 1050 is listed at 212kg and the 1190 at 217kg. A few weeks ago the 1190 was also listed at 212kg so what have KTM done to the 2015 model to increase the weight?

I don't hanker after any of the new bikes (yet), but a 1970s mobylette with a French tuning kit on it and racing bodywork :drool

I had a look at the 1290 today, and the ergos were good. I'll have a decent test ride once it arrives at dealers.:thumb

Andres will run for the hills.:JB

I was really impressed with the overall look of the bike and it fitted me well. Not bothered about 160 bhp as the 1190 I test rode was plenty fast, but I am very tempted.

Matt

Dear Giles .....

Forgiven Andres .... (on this occasion ...)

Re the 1290 ....

What makes a good road bike? Like a really good road bike? I'd say I would want;

i/ Sit up and see. Blades, Gixxers, Millies ... they don't give you the vision that road riding requires. It's a road ... I want to see junctions, over hedgerows, overtakes, limit points, road signs ....
Vision is key to good (quick if yer want it) road riding. It's not just the building blocks of planning and reading the road, it's everything ... Vision is key, and a bike that lets you see easily, is already quicker down a road than one that hinders your vision.

ii/ A softer bike. Do I want a Panigale R in my garage if I win the lottery? Hell yeah! of course I would. But is it any good on the road? Yeah if it's made of marble! The sort of road that something like a Panigale is going to come alive on, is going to be that brief section of fast, smooth flowing, A road biking nirvanna. Complete heaven .... that barely lasts before the reality of bumps ruts and undulations kick you out the saddle and stop you getting the power down. Your Panigale is literally going to be a pain in the arse most of the time, and relatively hard work to hoon down a B road.

iii/ Mid range grunt. The reality of road riding here in Europe, is that our road network is errrrrr bendy. So I want grunt out the corner. In line four top end rush is all well and good, but a road bike loves peak power in it's mid range - just as i'm picking it up and opening the taps.

So ...... take yer average off road style bike (so were talking broad brush strokes, we're generalising ... ), and it pretty much ticks all those boxes. Sit up and see, soft, grunt on the corner exit. Now add some weather protection, a decent screen, the ability to carry luggage .... and suddenly you've got a bloody good road bike.

I don't see the 1290 as a pretence off road wannabe. I see it as a pure road bike that, whilst probably a bit lardy, will be bloody good. It happens to look like it's off road cousins, because a good road bike probably will! But not (IMO) because it's fashionable. It's the old necessity is the mother of invention! Darwinism is slowly breeding the perfect road bike. (And to give the air head / oild head GS's their due ... they probably started that Darwin ball rolling).

Off on an 1190R rant now ... :D I think, with all the above being said, the 1190R is fucking awesome on the road. I love the 21" front wheel. It floats, and it steers just that incy bit slower. That's good!! The bike holds a lovely line and doesn't come off it early like yer race reps. Picture, as an example, a Right hand bend, bike buried nearside, but riders eyes glued into the limit point. Eyes are going to pull any bike off line early, and often we have to consciously push that bike nearside and try and keep it there - especially so with the race reps and the quicker steering bikes. Not so with that slightly slower to steer 21" wheel. It loves long lazy lines. The long suspension and bigger front wheel of the R make for great great road riding .... :thumb2

I like 21" front wheels :beerjug:

I had one, complete with racing bodywork, but sold it last year - if only I'd known, sorry :D

Andres

Not quite the racing bodywork I'm talking about, think 16year old boys mobylette :D

Very nice that though, I spent many a night razzing around on one in my yoof in Spain with all the other kids.

Quite the debate I missed yesterday, horses for courses and eye of beholder stuff. I'm sure that 1290SA will work perfectly for, and appeal to, a certain section of the biking community, but I think I'm more likely to migrate from the 1190A to the R version in comparison. But maybe that's because I've also got one of those new 5 foot wide plastic vibrator BMW Tourers in RT form for Domestic Management and I to tour long distance on, so I don't need another similar tool for the same job! ;)

Each to their own, manufacturers will make what they think the market wants (presumably based on what they believe to be accurate market research?) and therefore what they think will yield a profitable return, regardless of forum noise. ...

Will they be doing the larger tank option on the 1050 if so it may be a case of bye bye poxy gsa lc
