12GS Gamble

Ordered 1200GS March delivery. Now then, after reading all the bad press ie; brake problems, final drive problems, fuel pump problems etc. With Europe trip planned this year and a month trip planned next year have i made the right choice?????????????.

Seems like i might not make it back on my own two wheels!.

Russian Roulette springs to mind. Any thoughts gratefully accepted. Cheers.........

The vast majority of 1200 owners are having a ball!

Taking mine to Morocco in April and France for a month in June. Can't wait and 'am positive I wouldn't want to take any other bike.

No brake problems, no final drive problems, no fuel pump problems! In fact, so far, no problems

Final drive - I believe this was limited to a 100 or so early models where play could develop in the back wheel. Shouldn't be an issue for a new bike.

Fuel pump - appears to be sorted. See Dutchman's post in the last few days. In any event should not affect a new bike.

Brakes - well there do appear to be instances but they seem to few so you would be very unlucky. Not restricted to R1200 GS anyway; applies to all servo braked models. I think other risks are much higher.

Only manufacturer to give this. Could be because they're not confident it'll make it!
Also that's why all the locations of the dealers are programmed into the BMW Navigator.....so you can tell which one is the closest to push it to!

Or it could be that BMW feel more of their customers are likely to travel abroad on their bikes than other manufacturers do.

I had similar feelings before I got my bike with all this internet scaremongering. Now that I have it, I love my 12 - as do others I know who have them. Stop reading and worrying and start planning all the great rides you can take it on. So far mine and the others I know of have been faultless

I agree with aspad 5,000k going fantastically and I cant keep off the thing !!

The only problems I had were with the brakes. If I had the front brake on and then applied the rear brake (habbit really...) then the total braking force actually lessened! Not good at 80 mph heading for the rear of a car!

Other slight problem was a 20 mph crash and the amount of damage caused...

Happy as a pig in sh!t with my 12GS. Much rather take this to Europe than any other owned to date.

As for the brakes....wait 'till you have to do some hard braking from 80mph on a wet motorway - you'll be glad you had the 12. Minor risk of loss of servo with all BMW's (with servos)......on balance I'd be more worried about the myopic cage driver waiting to get you than the unlikely event of brake failure at a critical time.
