I think it was just an area of bigger stones/rocks.

His brake light doesn't come on, and it appeared he was trying to ride it out with some throttle on (probably the right thing to do) but it doesn't take much for a larger rock to start the front wheel waggling.

In the larger rock areas, sand builds up as well, 'cos it can't get as easily blown out.

So he hit the area at speed, went into a bit of a tank slapper and ended up doing a high side as the front tucked in.

His brake light definately comes on

They are good bikes (i have one) but imho riding it at that speed over that surface, in a remote area is just stupid ,when it goes wrong in the dirt it usually happens when you least expect it. Still each to their own:rolleyes:

Thats what you do it for surely ,its the thrill of it , the excitement that it gives as your doing it.That makes us human , cant see the point in doing it if your just going to tip toe your way through it.

But as you have said, then again each to there own :nenau

It didnt look like a tank slapper there were only a couple of not very nasty swings before the whole lot went down. But tank slappers will easily break your arm(s) if you dont let go soon enough so maybe he bailed out. Or maybe the front wheel going sideways dug into the sand.

+1 on the music. Why do biker vids always have to have crap music?

Looks very familiar... only mine was on the A12 6am..... result the same though. :blast
Take a look at the avitar.....

Yep, you're right.....and early too, now i've watched it again.

I was seeing the 'on' as unchanging off, but it came ON well before, IYSWIM.

makes more sense why he crashed out now......chances are, if he's kept power on and ridden it out, he wouldn't have. (Until the Oued that we can't see but he could, 30 metres further on of course :blast)

I'll stick with my opinion that the drive casing broke as a RESULT of the crash, not as a CAUSE though :thumb2

Perhaps he felt the drive shaft start to fall apart so touched the brakes then all hell broke loose when the shaft snapped, totaling the paralever.

All supposition though, lucky guy to get away with it:eek

he should have just opened the gas more to power out of the tank slapper :augie

Oh dear G*d - this video has given me nightmares..... I can't figure out what started it (brakes or no brakes, was it a tank slapper or not, big rock upsetting a - too fast? - blat setting up a weave, a puncture, shock failure, shaft collapse etc etc) - but whatever it was, the idea of accelerating out of it wouldn't be for me - I think I'd automatically shut the throttle (just from instinct). If I did, what would happen? - front digs in, and over we go?, weave stops?, eveything slows down and pants get changed? I can't stop riding my bike cos of nerves, but this seems proof to me that there are certain no-win situations where whatever I'd try will end in a big off and a 350lb backpack for a couple of hundred metres (and a trashed touratech manual......). The only obvious thing to me is to ride slower on that stuff........but even then, sh*t happens.
Any advanced skills out there to advise on best approach to high (or low!)speed, loose gravel, weaves that DON'T end in tears?

I'm no expert in off-road techniques but to me it looked like his back wheel was trying to overtake the front. I know that often the right thing to do is to add power and accelerate out of a slide. But I think sometimes this doesn't work. Like when the front wheel locks up, or bogs down in ground that's suddenly gone soft. :nenau

If the front wheel locks up you must be braking :nenau You aint going to recover that unless you come off the brakes. If your front wheel bogs down in something soft, coming off the gas will transfer weight forward loading the front and sinking it even further. You're better off trying to shift your weight back, lighten the front and drive ...

Who knows what happened in the video, it certainly looks to me like he's come out of his comfort zone with his speed just as he's hit a section of slightly rougher terrain, got the classic survival reaction symptoms (stiff arms, stare at the floor, brake ...) and it's all gone pear shaped.
Would he have faired better if he'd have have smoothly come off the gas, gently lost his speed without braking and staying very relaxed on the bars, concentrating on the horizon :nenau

Who knows!!

Well at least he is ok ... the ground looked as hard as anything ... I am sure the decent kit saved him !

That was a nasty few minutes when he was static. Horribly winded or self-assumed recovery position?

It's roulette at that speed, but that's what makes it exciting isn't? Whoop, whoop, look at me I'm a Paris Dakar racer (who also have horrific accidents)

Being a sad joyless old git though I think I'd weigh up:

1. How far away from home I was

2. My knowledge of the next 50 yards

3. How much I was going to spoil everyones' holiday

You don't have to tip-toe but I think that was a bit, er, fast in the circumstances

Still, if you do it and get away with it, woo-hoo!! Let's do that again!

gsa desert crash

Good post JB,
although the crash was spectacular especially the luck of capturing it,
its good to see what some riders do for an adventure,,,big risk more fun,,
when it all slowed down that was rough terrain for going so fast,, but fair play the others were ok and they had good kit on ,
thats the risk of enjoying a ride wherever you go, i bet he s out again,,,,
roamer

I would say the camera caused it.

he was waved on/told to speed up for the film.

Its one of the reasons they are banned on the 'ring

Not seen anyone riding so recklessly since I was following a well known Morocco tour leader on a battered old 1150adventure.

but he seemed to want to die that day:augie

Glad he's ok!:thumb

I rode my HP2E at over 100mph once on the sand runway beach on the isle of Barra..............I was shitting my pants but it all ended well enough and i'm guessing if i'd hit a soft spot it'd have looked like a 'plane crash'...........!

Adventure before dementia:thumb

FP.

He points to his mandible at 08.20 and for sure there is a radio opaque object present and I can't think what it can be because he was wearing what appears to be a BMW full face helmet so unlikely to have been acquired at the time of the fall:
