12k mile Service Cost in UK

Haha - that's brilliant! First big bike ever I owned and probably all the bike I ever needed.
I looked for ages, for a good one finally settling, for the one above from Glasgow lowest miles I had seen with good service history.
Then realized, just wasn't the bike I remembered (how many have found that out after a purchase) spoiled with my BMW now, the seat height on FJ was low and knees bend hence lower Buel footrests fitted, coming from a previous Zx12R, I wanted same type mirrors FJ12 mirrors where not up to much, Most owners change them, for longer stems. Screen needed to be taller, luckily still had the old one I never sold since last FJ12.
The oil drain plug was screwed in far to tight by some previous numpty, and after unscrewing it found the remains of the thread of the pan stuck to the Bolt threads.....so after clearing threads, decided on trying a helicoil thread insert, which cured it.
Was sold to some local not long after, for a wee profit, so ended that saga.,

Re service cost -
Checked out others dealers in the South West and Vertu Exeter were £250 above the competitors.
Thanks for the feedback (y)

Interesting, where are you taking it?

Al.
It will be Ocean, Plymouth. Always get a quick clear reply from Bill down there who is excellent!
As said the guys in Exeter are all OK - but life is too short to spend time navigating the Vertu central switchboard.
Then of course factor in the substantial price difference....

Looking at what people are paying across the country ?

Mines a 6000 so not a 12000 service but just an oil/filter and final drive oil was quoted £270 from a main dealer in central London
NN Service kit (no oil) incl plugs and air filter - £70
BMW Advantec oil 4L - £70
BMW Final drive oil 500ml - £40
No availability until early July....... Only had to call twice and email them to get a call back.
So £180 and £90 for labour isnt bad for 1-2 hours work. (Yes I know some tech is going to come back saying its 30 minutes tops)
Local garage priced £245

I’ve just had my 12k service done at John Clark Aberdeen, £580, seemed steep for what was required, Motorrad Dalkeith seemed like a good deal at £400, but it’s nearly 3hr ride South 🤔

12,000 /2 year service was £532 @Vertu Shipley inc the cardan shaft lube and inspection, strangely it was optional but decided to have it done an extra £80 😯
A few familiar faces have left recently !

As a BMW registered Independent workshop.... (Who can maintain warranties),

I charge £399 for a "Warranty Safe" service on a R1300. Using all genuine parts.. As a flat fee. There can be ambiguity on what is needed as brake fluid is every two years. And the bevel gear oil is every two years OR 12,000 miles.

This is also what I charge for the 1250. I might have to put price up on the 1300. As it does cost more as it uses more parts and oil which are more expensive. But at the moment, I'm taking the hit personally.

It should include.

Oil and filter change - 5 liters of 5w40 API SN MA2 (One liter extra than the 12*0) - I use genuine BMW Advantec ££££££
Oil filter element - The internal filter is more expensive than the tradition canister on the 1250 etc
Valve clearance check
Replace spark plugs - Same iridium plugs as 1250
Air filter replacement (Now two filters. One on each side - Again, more expensive and more time)
Bevel gear oil (Every two years or 12,000 miles)
Brake fluid change - Every two years. (I generally just do this anyway and don't charge extra. Because most dealers don't do it properly)

Visual inspection and lubricate cardan shaft -

This I leave up to the customer to decide. I charge £50 extra because it's a pain in the arse and not really necessary. You can't lubricate the parts that actually move (sealed bearings). And you can't determinate anything from a "visual inspection of a drive shaft". The shafts are now installed with proper grease from the factory unlike the earlier models and the swingarms now have drains.

I think they have added this to the schedule for two reasons.

1) After the debacle from the "shaft gate" on the 12*0 bikes, customers now expect some kind of check.
2) Almost everyone will skip this part of the service which may give BMW a reason to replace shafts under warranty.

I can't imagine anyone doing this service for less than unless they're skipping things. Or If the bike is out of warranty, then yes, it will be cheaper as you can use pattern parts and oils.

This service takes me 4-5 five hours. Which is more than a 1250.. But in reality it's all day with logistics.

I don't mind sharing that I make about £200 in total from it. Which those who have run a business or are self employed will understand as being almost fuck all for a days work.

If I was fitting boilers, installing kitchens, domestic electrics or plumbing.. Id be making 2-3x that.

Who'd be a Motorcycle tech eh...

I've attached the schedule to my post for those who are interested.

@MotoRevive Refreshing to have such open honesty, thank you for sharing that!

I had a service plan thrown in to a deal on my 2025, but when that is up I will be sure to give you a call. 👍🏻

How much of that was for the tyres? I'd be interested to know what a BM dealer charges for tyres as I'd always assumed it would be top dollar. I use a mobile service who fit at home inc wheel removal/refit, balance and old tyre disposal and their prices are competitive with internet tyre supply only prices

£440 for a pair supplied and fitted to my RS. They have to charge an hour’s labour even though it’s just tyres and not ‘technician grade’ work..

I took the wheels off myself and my local bike repair/MOT place fitted them. Total cost was less than £300.
Would have been convenient to have them fitted while it was in for service but not at that price difference.

Apparently my bike is taking ages for the software update so, I’ll have to collect tomorrow, or they’ve fucked something up and need more time to cover up the fuck up, either way, I’ll get to blast around on the 1300 tomorrow, which I do like, a lot.
Method in their madness…

When I had the f800gsa I got quotes from the 3 nearest BMW Motorrad dealers for the 12,000 mile service , there was almost £250 difference between most expensive and the cheapest.
Went for the cheapest, and nearest (the supplying dealer under the approved used scheme ).
Big mistake !!!!!!

Let me guess Vertu Sunderland? Every interaction I’ve had with them since they changed from Mill has been disappointing.
