Hi all, just booked by 2020 1250 in for the 12k service at the main dealer, asked if the cost included the shaft inspection and grease, that’s an extra £85 was the reply.
I thought BMW offered to do this free at 12k or am I wrong?

The first shaft inspection is free when they also fit the drain valve. The inspection is done via the hole they drill in the shaft for the valve using a camera. This inspection does not include disassembly and greasing unless the shaft fails the test and is replaced free.

Subsequent maintenance on the shaft is chargeable unless you hit the 37500 mileage when a free change of shaft is undertaken.

I was quoted £100 to inspect the shaft on its 2nd annual service.
I asked if the 3year warranty on the bike would be affected if I didn’t opt for the inspection. The answer was “No the warranty won’t be affected” so I left it.
I’d already paid upfront for a three year service plan and had no intention of forking out any more money.

Similar to me

I'm on 35000, but off to Pyrenees on Tuesday
I called the dealership. If they check before due miles (36k or so), they will charge me

They said BMW will do it ffor free once I reach the specified miles (ie when I get home).

....and my servicing is now done by ab Indie, not by BMW any more (6 years old)

Indie said he would do it as part of a major service, but I would have to pay for the parts (£100 ISH) if he did it.

I'll get motorrad to do it next month for free by which time I'll be on 40k miles

Interesting this as I’m on 34,700 and I’ve booked in a 36,000 mile service b4 two euro trips this summer…the dealer said “they should be able to change the shaft whilst being serviced…..”

We shall see….

When else would they expect you to come in and get it done?

I believe at that mileage they will replace it for free regardless of its condition, so it's a replacement not an inspection. At least that's what I thought.

Mine was done at a similar mileage with a routine service, Sytner Shrewsbury. Pragmatism for the sake of a few miles

That's correct. I got mine done at Bahnstormer at about 37k miles. I got my GS for exactly that reason, having lost a bike of a different make at just under 70k miles when the rear UJ blew and took out the single-sided swinging arm. Fortunately the rear wheel jammed between the pannier rails - tilted over 40 degrees and not rotating, but enough to support the back end and let me get down to 20mph before falling off.
For some reason I've become rather dedicated to the idea of replacing shaft drives early and often.

Mine's booked in for a semi 36K next Monday. Been told the Cardan will be replaced for free. It was already replaced for free at 15 but at a different dealers and the 2 systems apparently don't see each other so a new cardan shaft for me...I guess they'll change the oil as well, so that's a brucey as I already told them it was changed last year as well as a fork rebuild by denzo so they can skip the front forks
