My G310GS is due its 12K service. As the bike is under PCP, I have to have this done by the dealership. They are quoting almost £900 for this service. This seems a little excessive to me.

That sounds like an awful lot of labour charges. What is their hourly rate?
It is a faff to get to some things on these bikes but do you have to use the main dealer? Surely an independent registered motorcycle mechanic / garage is ok? Are you able/willing to take off the plastics to save them time? (and have means to get an undressed bike to them?)

I`ve not seen the full schedule of works required at 12k but I have replaced the plug and coil on mine. Despite having taken all the bodywork off three or four times before to add on the power and lights it was a bugger to use the "quick disconnect" tank fitting. I would estimate that even for a skilled technician there must be an hours labour just to remove and replace in order to get to the starting point.

I got quote for 12,000 miles service at 12 months of £753.
Sacked it off and have done it myself. Oil, filter and air filter done. Need to do valves, brake flush and fork oil change etc but have bought everything I need including MotoScan dongle and app.
Was actually quite pleased how easy it seemed to get down to cam cover level, much easier than my CB500X.
Had to stop there as I didn't have thin walled plug spanner.
Will crack on with the rest soon.

Thanks for all your responses. I have eventually got them down to £701.96 for the full service. Looks like the £700 service is par for the course. It was my intention to keep the bike and do the service myself as it's not very technical, and I wasn't concerned about a dealer's stamp in the service book which is a requirement for handing back a bike at the end of a PCP contract.
Unfortunately I have been lured into going for the new F450GS and the dealership has announced that they are not taking in any G310GS bike as they maintain that the demand for them has dropped off due to the new F450GS becoming available in the early spring. In other words, I am the author of my own misfortune.
To some extent, I can understand the dealerships position as they got caught with a load of R1250GS when the R1300GS came out.

Dealers always need to make money - just look at the number of BMW dealers that have closed in the last 18 months if you're unsure about that fact.

You might consider a 3-year service plan (which could also include the running-in service) with your new 450GS if it's going to be as expensive as the 310!

R1300.jpg

This is the schedule for the R1300.

The only real difference between this and the 1250 is now they want the shaft serviced at 12,000 miles. Which does add an extra hour to the job.

The 1300 also has two air filters rather than one. And takes almost an extra litre of oil.

£700 though. Ouch. And seeing how they knocked off £200 in an instant shows that they were just seeing if they could rip you off with their first quote. Not a nice way to do business is it.

As an independent using all the same genuine parts, maintaining the warranty and using the same systems as a BMW dealer, I charge £450.00 for this.

I'll even throw in a stale biscuit and a frothy coffee.

Dealers close because they owned by shareholders who think they can run it like a Macdonald's drive through. And then come unstuck when their minimum wage workshop mongs can't fix insanely complicated Motorcycles.
His bike is a G310 not a 1300.
My bad....More coffee required.

So I 12K service on a 310 is £900.. Reduced to £700.

Can I just get up off the floor whilst I digest that...

They quotes me £753 but that was standard 12 months service with bits like brake flush, fork oil change, plus I had done 12,000 miles so it needed valves, spark plug and air filter.

You're being bent over......

It's a single cylinder. The valve check is a simple. You have one spark plug. The parts on that bike are cheap. It's Indian. Fork oil change isn't necessary at all. But even if if you do it, the forks are very basic and the job is simple.

You'd get a K1600 valve service for that even at a main dealer.

Shame you're not closer. Id do that for half the price.

Yeh, that's why I'm working thru it myself. It's a £5,000 bike after all.
Even bought MotoScan app and OBD2 reader and with those and all parts I'm only couple of hundred £ in.
I had wondered if you came out as far as me.

having kept an eye on the prices of 310s over the winter, I'm not seeing a massive drop in value, and I would be prepared to bet that a lot of bikes do not have a main dealer service record! if you are not handing the bike back then the difference in value between a main dealer service and an independent is unlikely to be more than the difference in the quoted costs! as has been said, its a simple single cylinder bike, no hyper complicated bits and electronics involved, do it yourself or find a business to do it for you, I do my own servicing unless the bike has a warranty in which case its done by the dealer to maintain the warranty, then again, I dont buy new and I hold on to bikes for years and miles, so YMMV :P
