Sorry if this turns into yet another mpg thread, but does the title sound right to you all? I've used the search jobby and loads of mpg threads come up, but nothing that seems to help with my question.

My bike is only 500 miles old, and have been really surprised so far how poor the economy is with it. Don't get me wrong, its not causing me huge issues, but the fuel light came on tonight and then at 131 miles showing on the trip (with 32 remaining on the computer thingy), and I then filled up with 15.56 litres of unleaded.....about 38 to the gallon by my rough maths......

My question really is there something that I should be aware of/worried about with this, or is it completely normal until its got a few miles under it's belt?

Thanks chaps :thumb2

Seems like a high usage to me.

My 2010 GSA averaged about 48 according to the computer for the first thousand miles or so. Now after 13k it's up to 52ish on the B roads in the Yorkshire Dales with plenty of gear changing etc.

Having said that it depends on how you ride it.

Well worth a mention at your 600m service.

Mike

My 4 month old GSA has been pretty constant on 50.2/Mpg and shows about 350/60 range when tank is filled on centre stand. Riding motorway and back roads. When filled, range mileage doesn't drop for 20/30 miles.

So after 3500 miles I guess it's as settled as it will get, best way if you're really worriedi s to use the odometer and keep a log of fuel each fill up.

The economy was a bit better when used on a longer journey, but still not great. I do have quite a few lower mileage trips to & from work, which I appreciate doesn't help, but I still expected it to be a bit better.....just thought I 'd get a general idea of what the forum thought :)

As a side note, I do use the rev range quite well, so as not to labour the motor during the run in period.....I think its worth mentioning at the 600 mile service though, as suggested above, thanks :thumb2

Cheers mark, sounds perhaps that's what it is really.....I think I'd gotten used to the 650 economy!

:)

I'd expect closer to 50 almost regardless of use, apart from 100mph with full luggage. Is the exhaust sooty? As suggested, mention it at the first service but it'd be an interesting fault that could make it run rich, maybe a faulty engine temp sensor?

Well, seeing as I have got nearly 21 litres in my tank before now, I rather suspect you have quarter of a tank remaining? ;)

Fuel guage error at a guess?

I would say his gauge isn't far off, it should give you the warning with 4.5L left or at least that's for the GSA, I assume the GS is the same. If you fill to the recommended level its 20L so its about spot on unusually. Besides you cant argue with his maths on the calculated MPG.

Make sure you're really filling up:

Pump often clicks at about 17 litres, but I've been known to squeeze 23 into the receptical.

299.9 is the furthest I've done on a GS tankfull.

:friday

I always brim the tank right to the top. I think the fuel light is working ok, as mentioned above, as after it came on I squeezed 15.5 litres in......I've never really trusted motorcycle fuel gauges anyway...although even that registered what was actually happening (as in seemed to be fairly accurate as to the amount left in the tank when light came on).

Maybe it'll improve with a few miles, but it's in next week for it's service so will mention it then.

At least you know you still have a gallon sloshing around in there! :blast

Hmm. I have nearly 6000 miles on the clock (2011 GSA) and, apart from the first few hundred miles, have consistently averaged 42mpg or so. I do use the bike for commuting (17 miles each way) but none of that is in traffic (mostly out of town A-roads, none of it at peak periods). It's on a par with the Kawasaki GPX750 that I ran a few years ago, but nowhere near as good as the F800 I used to ride :-)

51.3 average mpg since new in 8,500 miles, according to the computer (GSA twin cam)

Not bad I think...a balanced mix of A/B roads, commuting, trip to the Alps, motorway, etc.
