1300 GS Top box recall

Very interesting..
I was at my dealers today, and again, no knowledge of any official recall notification regarding the pannier or top box.

Going to send them that document and see what their take on it is.

Not completely surprised UK dealers aren't aware of a recall mainly because there hasn't been one so far, absolutely nothing on VOSA for the R1300 ( which suggests BMW managed to make the self combusting starter relays issue a TSB-or similar- as opposed to a full recall ) Unlike NHTSA in America who seem to be pretty hot on these kind of things VOSA appear to like to take their time.

I have a new 1300, bought in Canada, riding in US. The dealer wouldn't let me take the top box because "the factory have recalled it". So now I am touring with a stupid blue bag strapped to the back of my otherwise super-cool 1300. I mean, wtf? The dealer has no info on the fix date. Anybody else got this problem?
Yeah, me too, in the UK.
Mine came into stock today. Told me the panniers and top box haven't come with it because of a recall as they have started falling off , but it's my lucky day as they're treating me to a silly ass poxy bag instead! That'll make touring fun. How long that'll take to be sorted out is anyone's guess. FFS!

No idea where these silly rumours start but the panniers aren't falling off.
I've had panniers on my 1300 since Jan & they won't fall off, the problem I've had is that if dirt & grit get into the release mechanism then you can't get them off.
Top box I don't have so can't say about that.

Very much like the Honda Goldwing fuel pump recall that is happening at the moment. If it wasn't for the U.S. and the internet I doubt whether Honda UK would even have mentioned it. :blast

this thread is so fucking funny ...

BMW can't even produce a topbox , without it having a problem , even the wops couldn't fuckup a topbox !
i'm sorry you paid " HOW MUCH "? for your piece of german engineering ? £20K plus ?
do you know why they cost £20k+?
because to buy the warranty costs £5k/bike .

So apart from the recall for the start switch , the panniers and now the top box , the launch has been a great success ?

At least the wankpanzers won’t be blocking the roads with three attached boxes like usual as the owner pops out for a decaf moccachino.

But must be a bit annoying spunking £23k, or more likely a huge PCP on the latest and grate-est (sic) and then find you can’t actually take the fucker away unless you find/purchase alternative luggage .

Any chance the next recall could be on the accessory search lights bolted to the front ?

Ta muchly

Unless you choose alternative luggage because you prefer it :nenau

I bought my full set of Paniers through my Bro-in-law who got me a friends and family discount 2 months before I got the bike and at the time I got my bike you could not get them for love nor Money. When I took the bike in for the first service I mentioned how I was struggling to remove them from the bike. They told me not too and if they took them off they would have to keep them due to the recall. They sugested I just leave them on the bike till recall stock was available.

They are staying on there now till that time comes. Ive not actually had any issues with them while on the bike other than I can get them off and the top box is smaller than I am use too.

Fully loaded varios ready for first road trip tomorrow. I like the top box but not sure about the panniers, there is a lot more usable space in the top loader options.

I have to say, the aluminium panniers look ok, as do the vario boxes but that top box just looks a bit odd. Love the green n gold colour scheme tho.

There is no problem with the side cases other than the need for some lubricant on moving latch parts. The issue with the top box is that the key can be removed without having the latches locked. A few mindless riders simply failed to latch it properly and pulled the key out . Their top cases did go down the road

I like the look of the side cases, however the left case no longer holds an Arai helmet. The top box looks like a Zerox photo copier. On the 1250 I always rode daily with the top case only , I just can't see doing that with the 13.

My side cases will not lock, straight out of the box onto a new bike they just don't work. Dealer can't figure it out either so waiting on an update from BMW. You can hear the actuators work on ignition or key fob but it makes no difference to the locks. The cases can be opened in all scenarios. I'm not too bothered just keeping anything of importance or value in the top box which will lock.

I thought all new side cases \panniers were on hold due to problems with the release catches??.
Are they the vario panniers you have. I've had the original various on my 1300 since Jan and they have always locked & opened the pannier side opening catches ok.
The problem I have is releasing the panniers from the bike if the sliders at the back get dirt and grit in them.

Yes, mine are the original varios which I got in December but only fitted to the bike last month. By the time I get home from this trip the bike will be dirty so it will be interesting to see how easily they remove.

Mine went back after four days (8th March) because of extremely stiff operation of the mechanism, plus the left side central locking wouldn’t unlock, whilst the right side was intermittent if it would lock or unlock.
