Searching for a available gsa , don’t have time for a factory order .

Found a few bikes with most of the bits i need but some have adaptive cruse . I had discounted it as a must have but now wondering if it would be worth having.

Anyone regret not adding it or the opposite

It's surprisingly useful on long rides especially when cruising on mways/dual carriageways. It will alter speed if traffic bunches up etc. Is it need or nice to have? It's useful but you can survive without it.

Don't have to use it if it's fitted, but if it's not fitted you can't use it.
 
Adaptive cruise is infinitely better than standard cruise - especially on busy UK roads. Well worth having (y)
 
I'm shocked the magazines and road-tests discuss this feature so appallingly in their reviews. I have lots of experience using in cars, but only tried it on a GS quickly and I think it was the posh setup - but if I ran the place there'd be some software tweaks to make it much more user friendly

two types on the GS, a £500 setup I think is just radar cruise, and £750 radar cruise, blind spot assist, and some rear end crash mitigation stuff.... I've had it on cars for 11 years, so for me there's no learning curve on the weirdness of a vehicle doing its own thing when using radar cruise - I wouldn't own a car without it

on Bikes all the reviews say it backs off too early - and it does - and that's about as much as they bother to say - so here's a bit more info

on cars the closest gap you're allowed to have is the two second rule - which in the rain feels dangerous at first, till you understand it pays more attention than most car drivers and it will cope even this close... With BMW cars, the gap to the vehicle in front defaults to a 4 ish second rule when you first switch it on - so you immediately need to go in menus and change the setting every drive - And once used to it and trust it can manages things, a 2 second rule is best for busy traffic, or effectively you go backwards as everyone will pull in to the big gap it leaves. 3 seconds is best in the rain, so the default is plain wrong from the factory. My Merc allows me to set the gap far more easily, and yet it remembers whatever gap I had for next use anyway - which is light years better than BMWs iffy setup - but its less decisive than BMW system, so I leave the Merc dithering at 3 seconds - where it also works best for stop start traffic - which is something the BMW bike systems doesn't do...

of course on a bike, as it can't stand on the brakes as robustly as a car (in case you're not paying attention or riding one handed, where it may corner, move lanes or just crash) it seems to have a 3 second rule as the closest possible gap. whatever it is, its miles away and quite irritating - so if you normally ride close to the vehicle in front, then nip by, this system will have backed off way beforehand, meaning you don't get close enough to overtake without opening the throttle manually... sensible ? but seems irritating and unnecessary

on a long boring trip when not pressing on I expect you'll be happy you have it - but in rush hour motorway commutes, I suspect it'll be a disaster and almost unusable

and for me likely the most frustrating point - you can't set a speed anyway near as easily as the std cruise bike's can - the old system works great - on my k16 in any gear and any speed - so if I wanted 8 mph in first, it just sets immediately and works perfectly - which is very useful

the Radar system wanted at least 20 mph which is very irritating - and it didn't like to set ! - appearing to want to understand the conditions first then try and fix a speed when it wanted - it was likely faster than it felt, but it seemed like it needed two to three stabs on the button and about two seconds before it would take the instruction and set the flipping speed. Whereas the K16 with std cruise, you tap the button at any point and that's it - set in a millisecond every time !

if you want to set a speed when the gear you are in isn't suitable - it throws a long winded almost confusing message on the screen. "wrong gear" would be far simpler. And its too cautious as well, 20 mph wanted the bike in second gear - where third works more calmly for a steady 20 mph

and another problem - it just gives up below 20 mph, with almost no indication - I'd have expect an audible beep - but it only pops up on the cluster you aren't watching as the traffic has built up - and thus its all down to you...

Thanks for that , almost makes me think std cruse is a better bet and its essentially free !

I'd have never have advised anyone not to buy it before I got to try it - but now I do wonder if the std setup is better....

as I use the std setup all the time and especially with slow motorway style jams (AKA highways agency extended tax payer funded tea-breaks) so I want it to do slow speed stuff and the ability to set in a nano second could well be more helpful than fighting with a gap that's stupidly big

lots of experience in the car with big gaps allowing halfwits to jump in front till your vehicle brakes continuously (thus allowing yet more morons to jump in front) - its especially bad around Stanstead where the M11 must have the most retarded drivers in the UK, they seem to think a one second rule even in the rain, is way too big

I hope I'm wrong about what BMW have done on the bike - as I just ordered one with it fitted....

it reminds me of the system in the Merc - at times I wish I had the choice of old style or radar - but you never get that - I guess they think an owner will get muddled, crash, and then try and blame the manu, that the radar system caused it...

I was fed up with my merc, found a mint very high spec 5 series at main BMW showroom, took it out and would have bought it - bar the missing radar cruise, as soon as I set the std cruise I had to cancel due to halfwits ahead - sales guy couldn't believe what I was saying, as he never used cruise ever, even on a 200 mile trip to Yorkshire... I left him with his insanity - got in the Merc and turned on to the A40, up ahead was to stop start traffic - within 200 yards of leaving the dealership I'd flipped on my radar cruise, it managed the stop start jam for 15 minutes, and it drove home without me touching the throttle or brakes for the rest of the 10 mile journey home...

And I once drove 85 miles round the M25 with radar cruise on in my BM car - it managed it so perfectly I forgot it was on - and as you go from 85 in the outside lane diagonally at the exit - it can stand on the brakes - even if the exit ramp is completely empty, if it spots a slow car in lane one on the motorway you know you aren't aiming at - that wakes you up !

Waste of time and money in my car. Waste of time and money on my bike.

I definitely won’t go out of my way to have it fitted in any vehicle I buy in future…
 
Well that sorts it then , one bike off the list !

Down to one , trouble is that dealer is offering the worse package !
 
I have it on the Multi and absolutely love it. I found the blind spot warning a bit of a pain to begin with but now find it quite reassuring.

Ignore what they are telling you, all the things they criticise you can turn off if you want to. If you don't have the you can't add them later.
Personally I like having the options & adaptive cruise works well in the right circumstances and used correctly. You can adjust the sensitivity and the gap it leaves.

And as for other comparisons with car systems in Mercs and BMW they have nothing to do with the systems and software used on bikes for adaptive cruise.

I have no idea why anyone would think non adaptive cruise control is better than adaptive. But if that's the case you just turn off the "adaptive" part and then it's normal cruise control.

If you throw ASA into the equation you then have a system which will also allow adaptive cruise control to maintain speed and distance by changing gear &/or braking.
Admittedly it's not something you will use very often but if you are on long journey & in queues of traffic it can be a benefit. When you don't want it just touch the brake and it switches it off. To turn it back on flick the switch.

The only reason to not have the options, and it's a good reason, is to save money.
 
A brief dip in to the user manual ( GS but doubt GSA would be different ) seems to indicate the adaptive cruise function can be de-activated and used as a conventional fixed speed set up. Might give a bit of flexibility if you've got a dealer offering an ACC bike with the other bits you want but has a deal equaling or bettering a non ACC bike. Be interested to hear how flexible dealers are at the moment.

Eg you set it to non adaptive and 70mph, then you catch-up with a car doing 60. You have to then switch it off or quickly lower the set speed, or overtake.
If you have adaptive set it will just slow down to 60 & follow the traffic & speed up to previous set max if 70.

What is a reason to ever prefer non adaptive cruise??, apart from not having it on the bike.

its a discussion primarily explaining what the system can do for people unused to it / or who have never used it - as its all 18 year old hand me down tech from cars, its got everything to do with it

the Bosch BMW system I had in my car is, I suspect the exact system they have now put on the GS - not bad that was a 2007 car !!!! and in many ways it works better than anything Merc use - so long as the traffic is doing more than 15mph

Piagio who own moto guzzi, and have their own business PFF making autonomous mobile robots (AMR). Took their own vastly higher capability AMR software and re-engineered for road use on the bikes - it is light years in front of the "old ACC" currently used on BMW bikes today. And part of the capability I presume comes from the difference my Merc has that my BMW car didn't.

My BM Car had a single front radar and fantastic but slightly dangerous logic. In its brain, so long as the vehicle passing is going faster by ANY amount (so 1mph is OK) if the passing vehicle immediately cuts back in front trying to take the paint of my front bumper - my BM car just held its speed without flinching - I loved this feature. And very perversely 10 year newer systems I have used from Nissan and Lexus still do EXACTLY the same thing.

But my Merc has one long range radar, and two outer short range radars. Its these short range radars that mean my Merc can drive straight towards stationary traffic judge the braking mostly to perfection, and then trundle along behind very slow traffic. Only if its 100% stationary for more than one second, do I need to "flash" the cruise stalk to authorise it wakes up and follows them again... And I guess due to some overly cautious granny in the safety department, my Merc stands on the brakes to manage a two second gap regardless of the speed of a vehicle that cuts back in my lane too early

Guzzi now have the capability to pull up to a complete stop and see other bikes correctly - and BM are working on next gen bike updates

Must admit I have ACC on my 1300, and very rarely use it, but that’s as much a function of the roads I ride on. I did find it good on motorways, but that’s the only place I would generally use cruise, normal or adaptive. A frustration I have is you used to be able to turn it off in the menu, and it would stay off, but it now defaults to on anytime you cycle the ignition.

Blind spot indicator works well, particularly on urban roundabouts.

Wouldn’t say it’s a must have, but wouldn’t discount a bike with it fitted if the rest of the deal is what you want. As said earlier, if it’s fitted, you don’t have to use it.

Excessive Brake pad wear ?

Never had a problem with excessive pad wear. Previous 1300gs did approx 7K miles and pads were still ok both front and back. My current one has 3.5k miles and pads are fine.
Don't ride around with ACC on much but don't see why it should wear pads down??.
Think some had issues with excessive rear pad wear but nothing to do with ACC as far as I know. It just uses engine braking unless it needs to stop more aggressively.
