hello all,

i know that GS's generally use a fair bit of oil until they are really well run in, but my 5000 miler is using about 100ml every 100 miles! does this tie in with your lots' experience?

Mine is doing exactly the same

Topped it up 250mls this morning after the weekend.

Seems very normal.

Beware of overfilling the oil. That would be a bad thing to do (easy to blow seals etc).

Make sure you're always checking the oil with the same routine - the boxer engine is unlike any other I've had dealings with in as much as the crank case volume changes by 1150cc every time the engine fires (the pistons move in & out in unison). This can play havoc with trying to check your oil level. My routine is:

Park the bike on the side stand, engine off. Take off helmet gloves, scratch bum etc etc (2-3 mins). Put bike on centre-stand, finish scratching bum etc (2-3 mins). Check oil. Should be somehere over the middle mark in the window. Add a little if it's below this.

Check oil before & after each ride (especially important whilst still running in, which, for the purposes of oil consumption, should be considered to be about 10-12k miles).

Finally, don't use any additives or synthetic oil until your engine has been run in and oil consumption has stabilised or stopped (mine doesn't use any now at 20k).

Mike:)

yes - i'm paranoid about over-filling. my usual routine is side stand for 2 - 3 minutes. then centre-stand overnight and then check in the morning. hopefully this'll give a fair reading of how much oil is in there.

PrOne.

Look in the specs section of one of the manuals that came with your bike. I think it should give BMWs version of what is acceptable oil consumption for your bike.

I don't remember the exact figure but I remember thinking that it was ridiculously high.

My GS has already stopped using oil at 5000 miles. Is this due to the fact that I thrashed it from about 500 miles old ???. My local dealer stated that lots of GS's continue to burn oil at over 10,000 miles as their owners don't rev them enough to 'seal them up' , and they continue to burn oil for ages.

I rekon a track day for all GS's using oil would do the trick.

Marcus.

:D

Mike O was right. The boxer configuration is very different from any other as the pistons move together so the crankcase volume increases and decreases by 1130cc every stroke. (This was why a friend thought he had blown his headgasket when he removed the oil fill cap while running the engine). I expect that this creates a lot of churning which vaporizes some of the oil which then gets shot out of the engine breather into the airbox, then burnt through the engine.

Am I close?

Either the service guys at Mill in Sunderland overfilled the sump or my adv or it isn't using any oil at all. Done 1800 mile and not put any oil in yet nor any smoking from the exhaust.
Only thing I've had is clutch stink when I pull off tho thats rare now.
I was aware that its a funny bike to check to oil on coz I meet a guy from this list last year at a rally so it's something I've kept an eye on.
Any ideas about this? Is it cos its a 2 spark motor and BMW have modified something or what?

I caned the tits off mine from 500 miles too, but mine didn't stop until it got to 10,000 miles.

My K1200RS otoh, didn't stop using oil until nearer 20,000

Got 30k on mine & it still uses oil & i regulary thrash the living daylights out of mine ? GO-FIGURE:confused:

From the Adventure forum (US), the consensus is that BMW will consider it a problem if you use more than 1 quart per 1000 miles.
That would equate to about a litre per 1,500 KM. Some have said that if you are using more than that, you should keep a log of your oil consumption and present it to your dealer. The oil consumption threshold may be different in the UK.

Permisable oil consumption is 1.6ltr per 1000 miles according to the book, thats a LOT of oil, i used 500 ml on a recent france & spain trip of 2700 miles.

mmmm,,

got just over 15,000 on clock
used 0.350 lt in 1000 miles, thought that was a lot, but obviously not,
