1988 R100GS for sale (Photos follow)
I have kept a maintenance log for this bike and, checking it, I see I’ve had it for nearly 10 years! Sadly, pressure for space in the lock up means it now has to find another owner to cherish it. I also bought a Himalayan 450 two years ago and the GS has barely turned a wheel since.
I bought the bike from one of the Irish guys on here who had the late Phil Gunn bring it over on St Pat’s day 2016. The previous owner had spent a fair amount of cash with an Irish dealer on a Wilbers shock and some mechanical work but had been dissatisfied with the work done. He sent it north to Jay Johnston of this parish who did a top end overhaul before the bike came to me.
The bike had 39k miles when it arrived. It now has 56K miles. I can’t verify the original mileage but I have a pile of old MoTs and receipts including its original bill of sale for frames and panniers from TVM MC Centre of Portsmouth. Also the rider's handbook from Park Road MCs Southhampton. They're both in the name of the same person who I assume was the first owner. It seems it spent the early part of its life in the south west before ending up in Ireland. I think it was laid up for some time as the frame was not great cosmetically. During lockdown, I tore it down and had it blasted and plastic coated. I really did not want a garage queen and have to be precious about new paint work so I stopped short of a re-spray. The tank is not too bad with a very small dink on the LH side. See pics for the rest of the body work.
Mechanically, the bike is excellent. It’s been well cared for by myself and occasional work by a local airhead guru and former BM tech. (Receipts available) The final drive UJ was replaced by a local engineering works and I renewed the clutch during the refurb mentioned above. (It did not really need it but while I was in there anyway …) SS pushrod tubes were installed at the same time. I recently replaced the rear brake shoes which has improved things – a iittle! New front fork bellows were installed recently too while I was replacing the fork oil. The battery is new-ish too and still holds a very good charge.. There’s an alloy sump guard too but not currently fitted to make oil changes easier. Oh and there’s a full tool kit too.
Additions aimed at improving braking up front are a larger disc and relocated brake caliper. I’ve also added a Migsel side stand and Migsel lowered pegs which make for a slightly more comfy ride for those with longer legs. The front wheel was getting quite tatty so I sent it down to Mikeyboy on here who blasted the hub, replaced the bearings and installed SS spokes.
Both tyres are full fat Conti TKC 70s and have loads of life in them yet. The bike has BMW heated grips and they work! On one (the warmer} setting. It also has a BMW OEM rev counter which is rare, I’m told.
As you can see from the pics, the bike is set up for solo touring. However I still have the dual seat, pillion pegs and everything else to return it to OEM condition. All of that will go with the bike of course. I also have two spare sets of pipes. One of these is the original with cross piece, the other is a 2 into 1. They’ll go with the bike too as will the BMW panniers which came with it. The bike is MoT'd until next November. Another 18 months or so and it will no longer need one!
Price £4500.
