classic standard 1989 red and white low front mudguard Paris Dakar.
I want to put a top box on it for a long trip and because my kids like to lean back against the box.
I don’t see many images of top boxes on these bikes.
Any recommendations or suggestions?
Which brand/make/model?

I have a Hepco and Becker top box rack and 2 top boxes - a plastic one with 2 catches (NLA) and an aluminium one with one catch. They both lock to the rack and have locking lids. See Motobins / R100GSPD / Luggage for the aluminium one - latest has 2 locks on the lid and you can buy backrests ALUMINIUM STANDARD 35LTR TOP CASE.

I had the big Touratech metal box and adapter. It broke and almost fell off. You wouldn't want your children leaning back against it! Also, it makes it hard to get on and off the bike. I threw it away as junk.

I fitted a Givi universal plate to mine, 40mm x 80mm ally box section made the spacer and then I bought some suitable end caps.

Cut the rear loop off the subframe and weld it back on straight/flat.
Far better solution if you really have to fit a topbox.
More support and lowers it ,win win.
If you use a top box regularly,
it ,
,or the mounting plate stays on the bike full time anyway
