Done a fruitless search, my Haynes only goes to 1983 and Clymer is usesless...
The Valeo starter motor appears to have packed up. The bike has only done some 25k miles but on having a look it appears that somebody has already removed/replaced the motor at some point - one of the two bolts securing the business end to the cases is a stainless item (that could do with being a few threads longer).
Are these two bolts all that holds the starter in place on the later Valeo equipped bikes?
Reason I ask is that I'm pretty sure the Bosch starter on my r75/6 had a triangular shaped bracket at the other end that bolted to the front of the cases. Has this triangular bracket gone missing - or is it something that was only used on the earlier bikes and/or bosch starters?
Cheers

I may have a triangular bracket in my stash of GS bits and bobs.

Yes, only 2 bolts. They bolted through the engine block into a threaded portion of the alloy cast starter motor nose piece.

The Bosch had two Bolts & nuts which ran through the block into the Bosch cast nose piece. Not threaded. The nuts also held on a clip to keep a bakelite (?) cover in place over the ring gear. The triangular bracket at the other end of the starter was only for the Bosch starter motor only (as that had a bit of heft to it). That bolted onto the timing chest.

So the Valeo starter mounting system was much simplified over the Bosch version, & considerably lighter. The Valeo also had planetary gearing, so turned the motor faster & drew less amps.

Reassuirng info so thanks for that
And thanks to Gelandestrasse too - I had a stooge around the MaxBMW website this morning and the simplified mounting was pretty much the conclusion that I'd come to. I installed a secondhand Valeo a couple of hours ago, swapping the short bolt on the nearside for a longer one (a caphead, it makes access easier). Spun up first push of the button - Huzzah!
And given that it was all apart anyway I finally got around to removing the 'Secondary Air System' nonsensee. I might even clean up the wiring and grease the connectors whilst I've got the opportunity...
Thanks again

As a by the by,
The original French Valeo starters were fitted with a set of metal reduction gears,,,,which were good.
Later valeo branded ones, and pattern ones made in Poland have a plastic ring gear in the “”gearbox”” of the starter ,
These gears will readily strip if used hard off road or high compression motors.
If hard use is on the cards, fit a nippon denso.:thumby:
