1992 R80GS Refresh

When I did mine (black not yellow) I took the easy way out via masking tape and rattle can! :D And btw Mr N, if this is a "refresh" then we're going to have to have words with the OED!

I think the OED definition is spot on ;-)

Definition of 'refresh'

refresh - VERB

If you refresh something old or dull, you make it as good as it was when it was new

If you don’t want the orange fork reflectors, then the bmw logo found on the g/s panniers fits exactly in their place.

I have them on my ST fork legs instead of the orange reflectors.

Looking for some advice on this sump guard . Now that I’ve fitted the sump extension it doesn’t fit/look right . Has anyone fitted something different and even better has anyone got one they want to sell ?

Before I got to the end I was thinking "room for tool tubes/boxes in there".

Can I check? You’re fitting the sump ext and the oil cooler? Yes?

Edit: I can answer my own question from your pic! DOH!

I was going to say that one or the other would suffice? Especially in UK conditions and even more so today! Just my 2p worth and I'm sure someone better informed will tell me if I'm wrong!

Would it be an idea to get cut a piece of 6 or 8mm ally plate same profile/shape as the sump. Then with a gasket either side a bit more oil storage. A similar plate for the oil pickup as well. I think the "sump extension" is a tadge over big and dont look nice.

I agree with PP that both the sump extension and oil cooler is way over the top and as you’ve spotted the bottom of the sump is now much lower making it very exposed to damage if you were ever to venture off tarmac. The OE sump guard is virtually useless anyway and is probably likely to cause more damage being bolted directly to the sump. The Siebenrock sump ring is probably a reasonable compromise in terms of providing extra oil capacity and some protection

I took the oil cooler off my 100GS for our African travels although I’ve now refitted it. I was advised that the exposed pipes could be damaged and make the bike unrideable so these days I carry the bypass pipe in the tool kit. Removing the cooler didn’t seem to cause any problems even in hot climates and heavily laden

Your sump extention seems a bit different to mine. I only have a slim sheet protection too, which doesn't worry me as I won't be taking this one anywhere it is likely to get thumped by a jutting out rock or tree trunk!

So my understanding is the oil cooler is for cooling the oil and the sump extension is for giving extra oil capacity hence why I’ve fitted both - happy to be told I’m wrong as I’m new to these Airheads lol

Smaller one fitted

Was just about to say that. I have them on both of my off roaders, much better looking than the larger one and gives the protection that you need. Not one of Mike’s but the same thing fitted.

I think the seibenrock/ motoren Israel ones are 4/5 mm thick.
Mine is 8mm thick dural plate,
I won’t fit a cast sump on my off road bikes,
If you hit something hard enough to hole my 8mm one you’ll need an ambulance rather than a recovery truck:augie

The main thing to consider is what use the bike will get,
The extension and armoured sump will obviously hold less oil.
But in hot conditions in Spain without oil coolers, the bikes we took did get hot,but no problems were encountered.
You could ditch the bash plate you currently have and fit a smaller, simpler one more akin to a g/s one which would look better.
Keeping your extension and cast sump.

Thanks Mike , I’m going to fit a smaller bash plate and keep the sump extension , I’ve kindly been offered one of these

I don’t have the option of fitting a bash plate direct to the sump extension as there is no sump plug in this extension unlike the Siebenrock one

I did manage to make a little progress today although most of my day was spent assembling IKEA furniture :-(

Headers fitted , carbs on and all cables connected

Coming along nicely.

Which is your deep sump then? If it doesn't have a sump plug, how are you expected to change the oil? Mine has a sump plug. I can't believe they don't. Could it be an easy fix, by drilling, tapping and putting a sump plug in? Motorworks/Bins sell sump plugs with a magnet in the middle. Thread the drilled hole to suit.

Just an idea. :beerjug:

I think if it's not been cast with a boss for a plug there wont be enough meat to thread into safely.
