I own a 1994 GS and have dropped it for 40K periodic maintenance. For the second time (last one at ~15k), I have been told that my starter motor is "ground" and needs an overhaul....I only ride on weekends....how long are these motors supposed to last? Is someone trying to pull my leg on this?

Not an uncommon problem - the magnets in the starter are glued in place and can come unstuck.

MikeP on here did a nice 'strip and check' how-to which I used when I did mine:

Personally i would be just a tad suspicious that a bike that was starting fine suddenly develops a problem in a dealership.

But then, the original Valeo starter is a badly designed pile of shite. I for one won't be bothering with all the rebuild hoo-ha. I will replace it completely with one that will not be subject to a sudden and without any warning failure because some glue decides to part company.

glue? its a joke. glue indeed.

I would rather spend money increasing the reliability of my bike than the more usual nonsense people seem addicted to adding at great expense. I'm sure more people would be changing the starter if it was actually visible and other owners could see that you have a bright and shiney blingy one that wont be so apt to fall apart. But.. it's hidden away and so you can't exactly show it off.

cynic moi?
