1997 AT value?

Hi, a request for help!
A friend is sorting out a garage clearance after his brother passed away. This includes a 1997 (RD-07a I believe but correct me) Africa Twin which has been off the road for 10 years. I have seen the bike in the metal but have yet to inspect it in detail, but from first look it does seem in nice condition. It’s not running at the moment as the battery was taken out when stored. We intend to change all the fluids and fuel and thoroughly check it over before starting it. Other maintenance may be required such as new tyres, brake lines, fuel lines, brake seals, etc, we’ll have to see whether we do all that before selling or sell it as-is, we’re not after investing ‘00s in it as my friend has enough to do as it is. It has a lot of extras as you’ll see from the photos, although the panniers and top box are missing. 25k miles, unfortunately no service book.
What are thoughts on the value? I need to stick a price on it before posting in the FS section.

Here’s my thoughts. Due to the circumstances I’d hope that it achieves the max possible for those involved.
We all like a cheap barn find, it’s human nature but I don’t think this should come under that classification.

In the same way that Charlie and Ewan catapulted the 1150 GS to a huge following, Adam Reiman has made these bikes incredibly popular amongst people wanting to emulate his adventures on these old Africa Twins and prices have been on the up for a little while now.

Despite it being laid up for so long it looks in really nice mostly original condition with low mileage.
The non standard parts aren’t a big issue regarding sourcing originals to get back to factory for the restorers and collectors, and won’t bother those who just want a bit of the Adam effect.

I can’t give you any advice on it’s worth beyond you doing a bit of research on MCN, Autotrader, Gum tree, eBay etc.
You’d probably be better going on the AT forum and seeing what similar bikes are going for in their for sale section as the Reiman followers will no doubt be frequenting that site looking and talking about this model.

What I would say is that unless your friend is genuinely happy to let it go on here at a price that is advantageous to ukGSer members don’t sell it short as I’m sure the right person on here will be happy to pay a fair price with consideration given to the circumstances.

This recently sold on ebay as a guide to what its worth fixed up and ready to go. Location and local demand is what dictates bike prices. My experiance is that people want and an up and running bike or an absolute bargain these days so don't go investing to much unless you're going all the way. I'd hazard a guess at sub £2k as it is.

It’s worth £2k (as is) to £4k (with fresh fluids and tyres)

Although they have a cult following for some - the one I had which was a similar age to this, I didn’t like it at all (heavy, underpowered at 60hp and soggy suspension) and soon p/ex it for a new R1100GS in 1997 which was superior in all areas

Ah now there we differ. The XRV750 Africa Twin is a bike that is more than the sun of its parts and the figures on the spec sheet.

There are people out there that would pay well for this bike as it is I’d guess.
Having it running would be advantageous but spending on tyres etc could just be an exercise in spending money and just about recouping it at sale time.

Whilst a sad tale, I don’t think that it increases the value of the bike.

My take on its value as is:- £2500 ish. But then I’m not going to be the buyer of it.
And I’m biased towards these lovely bikes.

Agree on the not replacing the tyre advice as prospective buyers will happily choose their own preference on type etc as long as they have passed the mot for the sale and whilst new tyres does make it more appealing to a buyer the cost/return does little for the balance sheet on this type of sale.

My route would be to recommission it to a point of MOT standard and then price accordingly.
Whoever buys it will probably be specifically looking for an AT rather than just on the lookout for a cheap bike.

You are right it doesn’t increase the value at all, but although I normally have no shame in making low ball offers in the hope of making a score there are some situations when I’d feel bad taking the piss.

A .worth now as is £?
B. worth fixed , usable with MOT £?
cost of getting it from A to B £ ? paying or diy ?

the buyer doesn't care about the previous owner , he/she wants a deal .
just cos you spent £1500 on a £2500 bike
DOES NOT MAKE IT WORTH £4000.

i counsel people every week , who have something they want fixed .... until i give them a quote for £1200 , start money, possibly rising to £1750 , to put a clutch in and fix the other problems that i find.

and yes it is easy to fall into that trap. been there done it.
