It's not a stupid question! I've been told that apart from the obvious oil change etc the cams need adjusting and they also re-map the computer to make improvements to vibration and so on. I only know what I've been told or what I've read hence why I want the heads up before my service tomorrow! I prefer to know before hand what to expect rather than being spun a line or two which has happened before!
I wasn't saying that it was a stupid question

.. sorry!
What I was leading to was that your next question will be about oil consumption and what type of oil you will use. On my first BMW .. I rode at below 4k revs but I didn't vary the load .. so the bike drank oil until it's 12k service
With my last two BMW's I used a route that allows you to vary the load on the bike. This made it drink no oil what so ever.
Then on the subject of oil. It's got to be Castrol GP, the one in the black bottle. Don't use synthetic

So buy a bottle and put it in your luggage just in case. BMW dealers sells them but at high prices. Go online and get it cheaper.
Tyres - The standard battlax are great although people complain about their wet weather handling. I have not found that to be a problem. I just don't ride in the rain. Most will say Tourances are the best tyres for the bike but I have actually never used them ever. They are the cheapest so maybe that's why they are best

I have also used Anakees which were good but expensive. I like the look of the Conti Road attacks because I like the fact they print the name on the thread pattern.
For off roading, it seems TKCS are best. I don't go off road so I don't know.
Metal Panniers - I really like Metal Mules but they are so fecking expensive and you can't even get cheap second hand ones

Touratech ones seems to be pretty good as they are cheap, and you can always sell them on when you change back to a Japanese bike.
I use something called Micatech. The are side opening jobbies which was a hassle on a ferry this year after tying the thing against the "wall"

The good bits though are that they don't have a FRAME. So when you have the panniers off, they look so much better
Seats - it's got to be sargent or you are just plain stupid. Buy second hand if you can, as it means when you go back to Japaneses bikes, they would not have cost you a penny
GPS - Garmin is the preferred one. Although you can be a bit left field and use that Tom Tom stuff. I am told they fall off from their cradle. Then if you have money to burn, buy BMW (made by Garmin).
Touratech - Buy from a BMW dealer that has a deal with them. They order it, you pay when it arrives. If you order direct .. you can wait for years I am told.
Wunderluch - the guy that owns the rights in Guildford doesn't seem to goto work that often (local dealer observation not mine). So waiting for an order might take even longer than touratech
Nippy Normans - some think he is a saint, some don't. I would just try by buying something cheap first to see if he delivers.
Foot pegs - The standard ones seems alright .. although it has taken chunks out of my "less than one year old" HG boots

You can buy Rubber insets for them at around £40 at the local BMW dealer which I should have done

Other people pay shit loads of money to buy fastway pegs. I have no idea why but guess they prefer to have pegs rather than money in the bank
Exhaust - You will go through all of them in your ownership, so you have two choice. Be the bloke that people buy second hand from, or be the annoying bloke that bought the second hand one just before me
Tank bags - the bmw one is shite. My broke in my hands on holiday this year. I am still trying to claim on warranty on them but suspect it won't happen .. so planning to put some of my own shit in it and send it to the GM of motorcycles at BMW bracknell and tell him he can keep this shit (geddit

)
Touratech do about three versions of the same tankbag .. buy the cheapest at around £125 then add waterproof inner bags. Still cheaper than the expensive "waterproof" ones.
Other bags - Best ones to get are the ones by Touratech for your engine bars. Someone will always buy them off you

But be careful not park too near the bar at a UKGSER do with them on. Some joker will put their empty pint class and cigarette packet in them
Suits (twat or other wise) - Twat suit makes you look like Ewan. If you like that then buy it. You can get it less than full price, just ring around until a dealer wants to do a deal. Streetguard are suppose to be good.
Rukka are excellent but for the same £1700 .. can you buy a couple of other suits over the 5 year guarantee

Don't bother yourself with that american stuff ... I don't think you will get on with them.
Rev'it looks cool although Mutley has a way of making it look
Boots - Sidi courier is a good compromise between rugged look and flexibility. Although you will need waterproof seal skinz socks to make them waterproof. Some jokers here thinks it's waterproof without them

Daytona and Altberg are just plain expensive, so if you are that type of guy you got to have them.
Alpinestar vector are good but the sole is not good for mud.
Tech 8 or Tech 10 are great but you will look like Johnny =
Muffs and Shite bags - you will find out what they are in due course. Maybe next winter you will get a set. A nice fella name Val H. sells them on here.
Muff does not = ladies private bits btw
Fuel - well as long as it's not diesel, I think it will work in the bike
Touring - Go do it! Best thing you can do on the GSA. It's fecking marvelous. Come to Morocco in April! You will have such highs and lows that when you get home, you wonder why it took you so long to do it

Just buy the ticket for the crossing and let your mind go. Harder than it sounds but very rewarding when you do

What to pack - well I have a great list done by one of the really nice people on here. If you want it. Post up an email address and I will email to you
Maps - Those waterproof ones from that german company are best. otherwise Michelin regional
Tour dads - Make sure you argue with them at every opportune moment

Hey .. you got to live a little

Especially when debating what the best route to Budapest should be
Road side maintenance - I have no idea .. I just carry a mobile and my recovery membership card. I pray I don't need to use it!!!
Mountain passes - try the Gavia pass next to the Stelvio. It makes the Stelvio seem like the M4.
Hope that helps
See you on the road soon!
