1150 GSA 2003...

please, I need to know what the connectors are called, that are part of the wiring loom - I have just had to take the starter out and cleaned shaft etc and all connections , but the fuse #3 has blown, hence no clock, and no power to the "Aux Sockets".
On the Adventure there are 2 sockets, ( 1 on plastic starter cover, the other by the fuel tank, on the beak bit).
So, some monkey has done a sh£$! job of re-wiring to the back of the front/beak socket, which I suspect has been intermittent and maybe shorts to the forks on full LH lock... !
I am going to need a new 2 pin socket that sits on the loom,( that connects to the rear of the socket) but have no idea what these are called, or if I can re-use the existing ? Looks to me as if they are kind of "crimped" on, and need a special tool to to fit one to the loom- I think the one that's there is buggered :(:(
Any ideas - ??
Finally, am I right in thinking that the front "Aux" socket is only live when ignition is on, - the socket by the starter is Live with ignition off ?

Any help appreciated, even smart-arse replies, as long as they're actually funny :guitarist:guitarist

Yes, you're right.

Certainly about the Beak one, that's on IGN......I'm 80 miles away from mine right now so I can't confirm the lower one 100% but IIRC it is permanently live :)

If the connectors you have are dodgy, you have a choice.....there are a couple of places that do OEM connectors, but it'll be a big faff to track the exact right oines down I suspect- or you could go to your local BWM dealer and get new ones, which is likely to be silly £ for a couple of odd bits of plastic.

If I were you, I'd just go to Maplins and buy some standard two pin connectors.....they'll cost you 50p each and will do exactly the same job.....strip the loom back a few inches and crimp them on, re-wrap the loom and it's job done.

PS If nobody confirms for definate that the lower aux is permanently live, PM me at the weekend when I'm back with mine and I'll go test it :)

Hi Fanum,
many thanks for quick reply .... however, if I just put a new connector on the loom , which shouldn't be a problem, it won't connect up to the rear of my Aux Socket ..... Can I easily modify the rear of the socket to mate-up with the Maplin connector ? That's the problem !!!

Might it be possible to take the socket off the bike, and solder a "flying lead" to suit the Maplin type connector- not easy to get to the Aux socket though .

I'll have a good look tomorrow, in what little daylight is left, now we're on Winter Time :spitfire .

This is the Socket I mean, and I need to wire into this, as the existing connector on the loom is probably kaput !!

On my 2004 1150GSA the power socket on the 'beak' is permanently live.

I have recharged my phone from it and I use it for charging the bike battery.

Ignition keys not required.

I don't think mine has been 'modded' so maybe they were changed after 2003 ?

Best check before assuming that it is dead.

Bob.

HI Voyager -yes, I think you're correct "beak" connector live all the time.

So- my main problem now is that I cannot get a replacement connector, that will plug into the base of my "Aux" socket-connector ( off the loom) looks like this;

Has anyone, by some remote chance got any spare, perhaps from a scrap loom or something ? At present, without a bodge, I cannot get power to the socket- I can do a makeshift job,but that's been the problemof the previous job someone did on the bike...hence the scorching on the end of the top cable :spitfire -that and the wrong fuse fitted Fuse #3 should be 15 Amp according to my manual -5 amp was fitted..... :(

Roger,

I have bought a few aux power sockets over the years and they are not all the same.

Some have shielded male terminals, like yours, others have un-shielded male terminals.

A quick rummage in the spares box produced this . . .

It is a BMW part - (No. appears to be 1 243 659 E 9008 .8).

It came from Motorworks or Moto-Bins. I suggest you give them a call as they might have different options (I think some came without the in-line fuse).

The in-line fuse may be useful as a secondary defence.

Hope this helps.

Bob.

Hi Voyager,
thanks for the info, and no, it isn't the same !!
I had to go to Moto-Bins today to get a new starter motor (phew -pricey..), and they kindly managed to find a used connector of the type I need on an old loom -cleans-up OK,and will attach to the loom, all being well.

Thanks again
cheers
