Any one know of a supplier of Castrol GTX 25/50. Seems to be the oil of choice for the GS. Due for an oil change befor trip to the South France but can only find 15/40s at local factors/Halfords. Failing that whats best alternative. I live South Manchester so local supply if poss.

Oil

Shell Advance Ultra 15/50 which you can buy from Shell Direct.
Tel. 01289 331183.
Fully synthetic so make sure your bike is well run in.
The last lot I ordered came to £64+vat for 12 x 1 Ltr. bottles.
Free delivery as well.
Plus it's a 50sae and not a 40sae which means it will cope better in hotter conditions.
BWM also recomend that the oil be a 50 if the ambient temp is above 20C.

Here is the Shell page

It might be the oil of your choice, but it'd be well down my list! (assuming you meant Castrol Merit GTX 20/50).

It's pretty old oil technology, it's a full mineral oil and it has a broad viscosity rating.

Try using Castrol GPS, or, better still, a fully synth oil.

ted, do your oil change in france, its about half the price across the water.

That price was for the first lot I got in 2001, the last lot ,which I got in August 2003 was £52.59 inc. vat and free delivery.
That makes it only £4.39 a Ltr. for fully synth oil.
:D :D :D :D

Oh la la.

We get castrol GTX over here too you know. Most big towns have either a hypermarket (Carrefour/Geant/Auchan) or Norauto who are the equivalent of Halfords. GTX 20/50 is widely available. Not sure of the prices though. To give you some idea, I bought 5 litres (with an additional 2 litres free) of Shell Helix 10w40 semi synthetic oil for 18 euros (12 quid), so Castrol GTX should be cheaper. Which part of the south of France are you going to?

Le prix de la huile

Popped into Carrefour on the way back from lunch, and they had Castrol oil as follows...

Castrol GTX 15/40 at 11.99 euros a 5 litre bottle (they never had 20/50)
Castrol GTX2 was 15.99eur for 5 litres

Esso Ultra 10/40w semi-synth was 20.99eur but you get 2 litres extra free.

Bargains a plenty...

Thanks for the info will look for some this weekend. First 6000 service so will try to avoid fully synth this time. Will get that at 12000, should be run in then! I'm going down to the Ardeche, went there last year, got to do the gorge road all the way this time. Kept stopping to take in the view last year. :)

Without wishing to start the old dinosaur/synthetic debate again, Ted - I'd suggest 12k is WAY too early to consider your bike run in & ready for synth - unless you're leaving it in for years due to lack of use.

I'm considering starting to use synth at my next service on my 02 Adv - 66k

Mike:)
