Trying to change the front pads on the Gs today and hit a problem which ive not come across before.

2001 1150GS, ABS, brembo brakes, non servo (but i dont think that was an option on the year anyway).

Got one side changed with a bit of problem. But when i try the other side ( the right hand side,ie offside) i cant push all the pistons in.

They are totally free, no corrosion on them, each one can be pushed in individually with very little force, as one is being pushed in, one of the others obvisouly comes out. But all four pistons are totally free.

But when i try to push all four in, i cant budge them. Its as though the oil wont go back into the reservoir and i end up with a hydraulic lock on them.

The brakes werent sticking, or didnt feel as if they were, before i started to change the pads.

Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Changed the back ones no problem at all, just the front thats causing the problem.

Thanks

steve

loosen (or remove) the lid on the reservoir at the handlebar.. just be very careful that it doesn't spurt when you push in the pistons.. preferably wrap the whole area in rags (just in case) slow and steady pressure on the pistons is the way forward.

your problem is you're trying to push the fluid up and its got nowhere to go - you need to let the air in the reservoir escape. (if that makes sense) you'll see what I mean when you try again with the lid loose (or off)

to much brake fluid, or maybe its going through such a small hole back into the master cylinder, that the effort required to push all four iss a lot higher?

why would you want to push all 4 back :nenau

where in Cumbria are you :beerjug:

Have you pulled the front brake lever after replacing one side, and before removing the pads on the other side. If you don't you usually have all the fluid backed up and with with the problem you now have. Put the old pads back in the R/H side, pull the brake lever to re-seat the L/H side, then try again.

Or just undo the bleed nipple on the caliper that the pistons aren't returning, and try again with the nipple open. be prepared for some fluid to come out of the nipple.

Sorry, should have said, when i had problems with the first side (l/h side, but they werent huge problems, just a bit hard to get all four pistons pushed in, but they did go in), but i tried removing the reservoir lid, and it didnt make any diff at all. I havent added any oil to the reservoir since i last changed the pads, and they went back in ok when i changed them then.

And you need to push all four psitons in to get the new pads in.

im in egremont, well just outside of it.

I havent tried that Neil, never thought that i might have a build up due to the new pads not being seated on the l/h side, that would make sense, or at least it does now its been pointed out to me.

I havent tried removing the lid since i put the new pads in the l/h side

Failing that ill loosen the bleed nipple to let a bit of oil out. Thanks, ill let you know how i get on.

Hiya

update:

Removing the reservoir lid made no difference at all.

However Steptoes advice off putting the old pads back in on the r/h side, pumping the lever to seat the new pads on the l/h side, then trying again on the r/h side worked a treat.

Still not sure why the brake fluid wouldnt seem to go back into the reservoir, but the pads are now changed.

Thanks for you help

Steve
