2001 R1150GS Gearbox Options

OK that's very strange, just dropped the oil out, although not the cleanest it was not full of metal and even hunting around with a magnet found nothing in the box or oil.

Got to head out for a 150 mile round trip in a while. Will see what's like after that.

It'll be fucked if you don't put some oil in it... :D

The bearings are sealed, don't firkin ask me I am not the designer, so a screwed intermediate bearing will not show kark.. have you checked the magnetic plug on the bottom:beer:

No magnetic plug in mine! But put a magnet in and around.

Of course I put oil back in it and 75miles later it's about the same, looks like a new or rebuilt gearbox is the way to sort it out.

Magnetic plug is on the bottom right under the normal drain plug. :rob

Welshman, it should be the but it's not, just a large blanking plug, with no magnet.

Packer interested in the gearbox.

Ok so replacement gearbox, here we come. Will strip the old one and let you know what I find. Then rebuild it.

As you had no debris in your box and clean oil I would think your box is ok, R1100/1150 do rumble a bit from the bottom end mines been doing it for years! :D use ear plugs and ride it!

Ah yes the bottom end rumble is there as well, but the gearbox is deffinately louder and I'm sure the rumble/whining is getting louder as well as the vibrations.

Oh well if it's not the gearbox I now have a spare!!!😅😥

Trouble is the R1100 / 1150 are not mechanically sweet, there are lots of noises, rumbles, knocks ect from the engine / gearbox dept., most are "normal" and not a sign that the whole lot is about to go bang lock up and throw you down the road, the simple inspection of oil for debris as originally suggested followed by an oil change and recheck in 100 miles will pick up most impending problems with the box, In the event of the box needing an overhaul I recommend Scriminger engineering from personnel experience http://scriminger.co.uk/

I would always opt for overhaul rather than buying 2nd hand as you will never know the condition of what your replacing it with and may be back to square one sooner than you think!

I think the dirty oil will tell you that things have gone wrong, confirming the noise was not a fake.
Worth checking b'fly balance in case engine is running lumpy at idle.
Deffo prefer overhaul or new v. 2nd Hand unknown.

Might change bearings in the s/h box before fitting

Welshman where did you get your bearings for such good price.

There is a very large black drain plug right underneth the gearbox, all the 1150 gearboxes have them. In fact on an 1100S it is the only drain plug.

I tried that route and found the cat converter on my US 2002 1150GS is in the way by just a hair to get the plug out of the way, probably only 3 mm or so. I'll have to take the convertor off and bang a dent in it, so I can get that big plug out easily the next time.

Its easier with a Y piece, Colorado is one of my favourite places, enjoyed Colorado Springs when I was over there.

At long last I got time today to change the gearbox.
Few other jobs done at the same time and after a ride I can confirm the gearbox is now quite, just in time for the clutch as well, almost on the rivets, replaced with one that will run in oil.
But as suspected, bearing is gone in slave cylinder, could not change the cylinder although I have a spare as the pipe is well rusted so new one on order along with a new pushrod as this is worn at the clutch end.

Now ready for another 125k miles.
