Hi Guys,

This is my first request for help so please be gentle with me!

I have a 2002 R1150GS Adventure with ABS, but no servo thankfully. I recently experienced a pulsing sensation when applying the front brake and then last week the calipers stuck on, not a pleasant experience on the M1 motorway. Manage to free them off at the roadside and ride home using the back brake only.

Removed the calipers off the discs and although not clogged up with gunge a couple of the pistons were very stiff to move and required considerable effort to free them up. I ordered and fitted two caliper repair kits for the front calipers, bled the brakes and although the caliperss are not sticking as much as previously there is still too much resistance when moving the front wheel by hand. ABS works ok with no warning lights showing, master cylinder, pads and discs are serviceable. Braking performance is excellent!! The brake calipers have been stripped and cleaned on a regular basis and I am at a loss as to the cause of this problem.

Is there anything else I should be looking at before venturing to a dealer?

Check flexible brake hoses they can fail internally (you might see a bulge) If they are as old as the bike renew anyway

Both calipers sticking or just the one ?

Could be the hoses, if it's just one caliper sticking it'll be the lower hose on the side it's sticking (obviously).
If both are sticking it could be one of the upper hoses.

Thanks for the advice, my bike has braided hoses fitted front and rear. Are these standard fitment on this year of GS or has a previous owner fitted them? Trying to establish their age and therefore their serviceability.

Also been doing some more threads and started thinking it might be the master cylinder, but have tested that and both tiny holes inside the reservoir are clear and spurt when the lever is pulled!

I believe the left hand caliper is sticking, but with the braided hoses fitted I obviously can't see any bulges. :blast
