Its a few years since I has my 1200GSA swiped, but over the weekend I returned to the fold and picked up a 2003 GSA. The bike needs a bit of TLC, but is running well andI'm really happy with it. Great to be back on a GS.

I've been looking at the parts microfiche as I can see a few bits I need to replace, but I've noticed the rear caliper bolts are spaced out in a way that I'm not expecting, or cant see on the microfiche. It looks like the bolts are too long and have been spaced out (and have very subtly touched the rear disc at some point). As you can see the area needs some tidying up, and I'm not entirely sure the best way to get these calipers looking peachy again, but what is the fixing onto the caliper bracket actually supposed to be like? Is it corretc? Can anyone share a photo of a correctly mounted caliper?

Thanks,

H

Maybe it had a hugger fitted that’s been removed prior to you getting it.
PO couldn’t be arsed to replace the bolts with ones of the correct length.
The finish on the caliper doesn’t look too bad,I’d just unbolt it,remove the pads and fittings and give it a good scrubb up with tfr and a tooth brush.

Oh , by the way,
The pin holding the brake pads in should have a v.small circlip on the end of it,
Looks like it has a bit of wire twisted around it.
If I were you I should go over that bike very carefully before you ride it.
Watch out there’s a bodger about:blast

It looks like someone has removed an aftermarket hugger, which mounts using brake caliper bolts, and used washers to replace the thickness of the hugger....... *edit, Mike best me to it.

Thats it! Thank you - makes sense. Yes, Hugger was making a racket so was removed. I'll order some new bolts and clean it up when I replace them. Thank you all!

Should look something like this, also 2003 GS

Mine with the aforementioned e-clip in place:)

Good spot! I think new pin, spring and clip needed on top of that toothbrush and cleaner. Bolts and dust cap for the nipple ordered last night - shame to throw the gaffer tape cover out....

Your circlip is also missing:blast

Agreed, I checked after I read your post about the piece of wire, and it’s a wired one because I’m the only one who has changed the pads, I’m 99.9% sure there wasn’t a circlip fitted, there soon will be. :beerjug:

I’m wondering what that tape is supposed to be doing around the bleed nipple?

Give it a bit of TLC and it’ll be fine :D

The circlip ,e clip, call it as you like,
They don’t get replaced as most suppliers sell as a kit.
The main retaining function is done by the split coller on the other end of the shaft,so no real danger.the clip is beltnbraces.
1200 models have an R clip instead.,not so easily lost.

Flip that’s a mad price for a wee clip. I bought a box of them years ago (from a bearing supplier) hundreds of the things for about a fiver!
