Hi All,
i have a 2004,1150 gs adventure, non abs,6 sp with a strange thrum in 4th gear. whilst in this gear, at any rpm at aproxx every 50 metres you can feel a vibration coming through the bike, "Athrumming" , in gears number 1,2,3,5,6, it doesnt happen.
i suspected bearings as the final drive seal on the gearbox had gone,(surprise, surprise), but alas no, the bearings are all like new and the inside of the gearbox was like new too, with no swarf anywhere, almost surgically clean.the prop uj's are like new too, but the splines are a bit sloppy at the front and rear, with the prop middle splines being perfect.
the bike has covered 25000 miles, and bmw dont want to know cos i bought it outside of the bmw dealer network, as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
Any ideas lads?
Many thanks for your help.
Almost forgot to thank Darren at Motorworks for all his help,TOP MAN..

Noisy gears

If it were bearings ir would happen in every gear not fourth. My fourth gear make a similar nopise at 50.000 miles, this is I think due to the fact that this is usedd more than the other gears in traffic etc, been like it for a long time no probs.
dave (if it aint broke don't fix it) GS.

I have a standard 1150gs on an 02 plate with about 23000 miles on it, and I can tell I'm in 4th without looking at the RID by the noise it makes!! It is even worse two up. You can feel the vibrations through the pegs then. Changing to a synthetic gearbox oil made no difference. My mates GSA is the same. It has never got any worse though, I think it's another "quirk".

Spooky that.... 2003 GSA 15000 miles.. exactly the same in 4th gear....none of the others....

Just stuck 'gearbox' in the search and there you go....:thumb2

Sounds like its not too much to worry about....

I'll add my 2 pen'orth and say that my 4th gear is the same. The only thing i can come up with is that it is not engaging properly in the box and is rubbing against another gear on its edge, but not all the time.
If you have still got the box in pieces, check out the pinions for rubbing, selector forks for wear and replace the selector return spring.
Post piccies if you find anything.Ta,Col.

Bugger, just noticed the original posting date.:(

This has been discussed a lot in other threads, they all do it.
My 2003 Adv that only had 800Kms on the clock when I got it two weeks ago does it, now 2400Kms, 4th gear 3000 revs, thrum, thrum, thrum !:thumb (character)
