Hi,

My wife has a 2004 Dakar with a fairly old battery still running strong (based on the fact it has a sticker that dates the battery to early 2005). We are currently looking to ride to Japan and take 6 months off work to take or time and enjoy traveling in the countries on route. Given that we are going to be out in the sticks. I was looking to replace the battery as a precautionary task. I am keen to know if anyone has any recommendations and some guide prices? I've had a look around and it seems most batteries seem to go for around the ~£140 mark which was higher than I expected.

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Jimmy.

Hi jimmystewpot,

I needed a new battery last year for my trip round Europe. I have a B&W Dakar 2000, with original battery. Thought it time to get a new one.

Yup the Westco sealed battery is the way to go. Really good cranking power and sealed so you dont spill or boil the acid out. Is bigger in dimensions to the stock one but fits just fine in the original's place without mods. Comes charged too.

+ 1 for the Westco.

I wouldn't bother spending extra on a gel battery. They don't seem to last any longer than the normal sealed ones these days, plus the sealed ones are just as leak proof if the bike is tipped over in normal use.

However if your planning to fix the battery upside down or park the bike every night on its side. a gel battery might be a wise move :augie
